Skate of the Union by Chris Nieratko

skate of the union

Chris Nieratko has a pretty interesting article on ESPN about how economic woes are affecting the skateboard industry. He talks to pros, business owners and former pros turned industry honchos. It’s a quick read sprinkled with a healthy dose of gratuitous skate shots, so so check it out.

- Thanks to Michael Brooke for the tip.

Maybe this wave of bad economic times will help shape these kids into not being so materialistic. Maybe it’ll get Sheckler off my damn TV. Miracles do happen!

The economy is railing me. In my business sales are down over 50%. Then credit card companies decided to jack my rate up to 21.99% just because they ‘can’, I didn’t break one of their rules. A preemptive strike before the legislation passed on credit cards, so they raised everyone’s rate up to 21.99%. How insane!

It’s not like like they’re hurting, in 2009 for all the credit card companies, Visa, Amex, Mastercard, Etc, all of them posted a minimum net profit of over $550 million, EACH. Some over a billion dollars!

I could complain for non-stop days about this… so I’ll spare you. What I wish I could do is convince everyone in America to stop paying their credit card bills. Make those bastards bleed and regain control! If only I were Che Guevara

  2. Pay your credit card bills, then save your money, and don’t ever use the card again. That would hurt them and wake them up. The hard part is getting everyone to do this at the same time.

    Oh boohoo,Volcom lost some money!
I feel bad if a skate shop has to close but this article talks about ‘skate’ companies.A lot of those are actually clothing and shoe companies ’cause we all know where the money is being made.
And it’s quite common for a clothing brand to fall down.
I’m a simple customer/civillian and I think skate(brand) clothes are expensive. To me there in the luxury market, which of course is being hit in a crisis.

  6. conahan says:

…net revenues were down 13 percent, 538.7 million dollars compared to 606.9 million dollars.

Wow, that’s rough. Need to crash on my couch dudes?

it must feel awful not being able to make a house payment…..on your vacation home.
