SOTW 12-29-08: Sign in Bowl
Squeaking in under the wire in the last few hours of the last day of the week, this week’s Shot of the Week is Billy Runaway at the Sign In bowl in LA, as shot by Peter Dietsches in 1990. Nothing says late, late 80’s like those Hamor Hed and Gouge logos. You might remember Billy Runaway in the early days of Thrasher. He now heads up Addikt Skateboards. Check out the full frame Shot of the Week.
Uncool Pools: Media Conspiracy
Do you remember the pool that Mark and I caught a lot of flack for riding repeatedly? I had to laugh when I saw a full page shot of Al Partanen in the latest Concussion – #39: The Photo Issue. Apparently Davoud and photog BK didn’t get the memo about that place not being cool. I wonder if Al is pissed? The Skateboarding media conspiracy is out to fool everyone. Just think of how many potential “uncool spots” you’ve been tricked into thinking people actually enjoyed. I included a few shots from one of the sessions we had there after the jump.
Hard Times Tough
From the Addikt Skateboards blog. RealtyTrac says 1 out of every 194 U.S. households were in some stage of foreclosure in 1Q’08 – not sure how many of those houses have pools, but I know at least nine of them do. Get some now, cause McCain said he’s gonna change all that. Or did his advisors say American consumers were whiners? I can’t remember. Ooh! Politics and pictures of pools in the same post. Flame on!
American Hero or Skater Traitor?
“Only a fool has a pool and keeps it full. Only a traitor doesn’t drain his pool.” US Bombs, “Jaks” Ryan Lochte recently obtained two gold and two bronze medals in the 2008 Beijing Olympics for his swimming. He even set a world record for the 200 meter backstroke. However, the Olympic trials in July were in question for him due to an injured ankle acquired while (skateboarding) dropping from the deck of his house, as noted by the folks at Yahoo!Sports. -Thanks Sarib for the tip
Planespotting
There’s hundreds of pools visible from planes flying in and out of Midway and O’Hare International Airports in Chicago, problem is, 98% of them are above ground pools, as seen in the shot above that I happend to find on Google Maps. I suppose it’s inevitable with an airport as busy as O’Hare that the satellite would catch a plane coming in for a landing. Flying home (I can’t find the lyrics to the Vibrators song online) to Portland I took some aerial shots from the plane.
SOTW 7-21-08: It’s deep. Very deep.
This week’s Shot of the Week features Mark Conahan in a photo that he says he’s embarrassed of, but shouldn’t be. When is two and a half feet below the coping still an admirable feat? When there’s another 8 feet below you and the transition is ridiculously tight. This is the horizontal crop of the pic so it would fit in the post reasonably. Check out the vertical frame Shot of the Week and then follow the rest of this post to get an idea of how deep that deep end is. This pool was demolished this morning, so everyone who feels obligated to comment on how it looks like a piece of crap can just save your breath. Someone has to skate the crap so the super cool tough guys can get all the glory. Thanks again to the guy who gave us the opportunity to skate this very short lived pool. Much appreciated.
SOTW 7-07-08: The uncool pool
This week’s Shot of the Week is the Q-Bert pool in Happy Valley, Oregon that everyone loves to hate. You don’t have to worry about how much it sucks anymore because it is recently deceased. This is Mark Conahan, obviously. If you think this pool is only good for “spending all day trying to get over the light,” I suggest you see the extra pic after the jump. Check out the Shot of the Week
Squarebuckets Crew pool video
I think this was an entry in some sort of video contest being held by the LA Times back in 06. It’s a collection of pool skating by the “Squarebuckets Crew” out of Plasterville, California that I know nothing about. I enjoyed the video, but neglected to post it until now.
Friday T&A on S&A: Bikini Girl skates pool
She says: I hope I don’t break my neck! Yeah, that would be a real, uh, shame.
Public Service Announcement: This dog bites
This is a Public Service Announcement, with(out) guitars. If you see this seemingly friendly, albeit sketchy looking dog hanging around by a certain pool, pay attention to him. He gets really agitated when you skate. Don’t stand too close to the coping in the shallow, because he bites. This dog bit me in the back when I wasn’t looking. It broke the skin. I hope his rabies shots are up to date.
