SOTW 5-25-09: Parking garage pricks
I almost forgot to do a Shot of the Week, so I pulled this one out. This is street skating circa 1989, and part of that scene was being a dick to pedestrians and cars… This shot involved the fake ollies (layback ollies?) where you skate up to something and put your hand on it to support your weight while you ollie the board onto whatever impossibly high obstacle was in front of you. Of course, nowadays people could probably ollie onto the hood of a car without help. I still love to do this trick, and recently brought it out of retirement, although not on the hoods of a cars belonging to people I don’t know. The guy in this pictures shall be named only as “Carl” as he has since gone onto become a productive member of society, and probably wouldn’t appreciate this picture showing up in his background check the next time he applies for a job. Check out the full frame Shot of the Week.
SOTW 5-18-09: San Clemente
I know this is a long shot, but has anyone heard the rumor that people are skating in the pools of homes that are in foreclosure? This is a close up of a shot of Broken Magazine editor Nick Gates taken in San Clemente, California, as shot by Peanut. Issue #9 of Broken is available for download. Yes, I’m going to make you click on through to see the full frame shot. Check out the Shot of the Week.
Concretins at Crawdad Hole
Here’s a couple pics I liked from the Concretins blog covering a recent trip to North Carolina. This private spot is called the Crawdad Hole. The top shot cracks me up. Somebody’s gal has a sense of humor. Good on ya. Check out Concretins ongoing road trip posts. – Thanks to Nik for the tip.
SOTW 5-04-09: Conahan and Colin
Yeah, I’ve over-posted about this dead pool, but this the last one, I promise. I was saving this for a shot of the week because the head of a certain skateboard company is lurking in the window behind the action. You might even say he’s hamming it up. Mark Conahan, Happy Valley Oregon, Spring of 2008. After you check out the Shot of the Week, make sure you hit the enlargement.
Fresno pools video
Dean of Team Shralp/100 points out this preview of an upcoming project. The clip is chock full of amazing pool skating. Dean is a bike rider who has been a real supporter of the skatepark effort in Portland, coming out for meetings and raising money. Sorry about the Ed Benedict thing dude, vert riders ahd nothing to do with the bike ban. Check it out after the turn.
Let’s film a music video in a pool, again.
An unnamed Domino Records band wants to shoot a music video in an empty pool in the L.A. area. They say it will take a good day of shooting, so it sounds like it will need to be a permission pool. I told the rep that it sounded like a lazy scam to find an empty pool to skate, but he assured me it was legit. They need skaters too, and there will be some sort of compensation involved. You can contact Robert Nell if you want to hook him up. In the mean time, let’s revisit a brief (incomplete) history of skateboarding in pool like structures in music videos. In the top row there are two shots from the current running band AFS (Arthritic Foot Soldiers) that has a video shot in a wooden bowl for the song “Chicks, Beer, Fame & Money” off the album Immature Nobodies. Check out the longboard guitar. It’s an interesting application, but not nearly as well done as the one featured on the cover of the Surf Punks first album My Beach. Then of course there is the grandaddy of all bowl riding skate videos, any of Agent Orange’s segments from SkateVisions. Another…
With friends like these…
“Hey I just moved out of town and now I’m living in a state that’s lousy with homes in foreclosure and empty pools. My pump isn’t working… waaaah! If you’re going to have a gallery of unskateable pools, why not show some skateboard ready ones too?” Thanks a lot man. I really feel for you, Runaway.
Happy Valley Skatepark
Time for more input on the Happy Valley skatepark in Clackamas County, Oregon. We must have missed a meeting or two, because from the looks of the tiny renderings, they appear to have chosen a designer already… Street plaza city, Newline? The meeting is Wednesday, April 29, 2009, from 5-7 p.m. at Sunnyside Elementary school on 13401 SE 132nd Avenue in Clackamas, OR. No word on whether the infamous Happy Valley back biter (seen above, lower right) will be allowed in the park. This is as good an excuse as any to post some more photos form the Happy Valley pool you love to hate.
Generic Pool Service
In the 70’s you could probably get away with wearing this shirt and being cool. You could get away with it now too, because it’s vintage, but you don’t really see the skateboarder on a t-shirt style these days, except for little kids. This shot came from Peter Diepes (Dietsches ?) OMSA blog that is primarily dedicated to pool skating.
SOTW 1-5-08: More Sign In bowl.
After seeing himself in last week’s shot of the week, Runaway insisted that we at least use a good shot. That wasn’t a dig a Peter Dietsches’ photo skills, Keith was just being self deprecating. In order to detract attention from his corn rows, Keith furnished two great shots of TSOL member Ron Emory at the same bowl. Above is a close up of one of them. Love the debris flying off, and if you can believe it, it’s a make of a backside edger that took a turn for the hairy. Word is he made those regularly. Keith said Ron owned that pool, and you’ll be inclined to agree if you check out the full frame Shot of the Week as well as a bonus shot after the jump.
