Professional jock gets skate-harassed

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco was busted trying out a skateboard in his own driveway.

I’d never been on a skateboard in my life, so I was literally riding it about 10 feet down my driveway just to see if I could stand on it and stay upright,” Flacco said Wednesday on “NFL Total Access.” “One of my neighbors must have called in looking for (Ravens general manager) Ozzie Newsome and left a voicemail on his secretary’s phone saying, ‘Hey, man, you got to let Joe Flacco know we’re trying to win the Super Bowl around here! He’s at home riding a skateboard. Somebody’s got to let him know what the deal is.’

Geez man, get your head in the game. True story: On the way to a skatepark assorted S&A authors once got into an argument with Grover about whether organized sports build character in young kids. Grover was massively in favor, in a boot camp sort of way. As in all kids should have a mandatory team sports tour of duty. Cut to five years later and he doesn’t want Jack to sign up for basketball because it would distract him from skateboarding. He has loosened up though, he’s coaching his boy’s soccer team.

Joe’s got a big game this weekend. 40 years of skateboarding on sitcoms should have told him to save his curiosity for after the playoffs.

Ghost of Dee Dee gets rad

There’s more Dee Dee merch now than there ever was when he was alive. I don’t know who benefits from that, but some of it is pretty cool. On the left, Dee Dee as he appeared in Tank Girl: Skidmarks, shown as he might have appeared on a custom Bulldog board. On the right, Dee Dee as the Powell ripper. Ripper clones are a dime a dozen, but Dee Dee being actually dead, well that makes this one special.

Flexible and Radical

Believe it or not, this is not the first graphic of a skateboarder to appear on a flying disc. The other one one I have is just a generic flying disc, but this is an honest to god Frisbee™. The Malibu Skate model features what looks like an op-art frontside invert. Malibu? I heard there was a punch out. Closeup after the jump.

Truly gratuitous Tony Hawk

Tony Hawk on the cover of the Fall 2011 editions of MIT Sloan Management Review. Why, I’m not sure, because he’s not really central to the article, except as an illustration of consumers modifying products to make something new that didn’t exist in the marketplace. Not exactly a timely reference to the now popular DIY trend in electronics, arts, crafts, mechanics, programming, and well, everything, but I guess it is one of the earliest and most visible reminders – Kids tearing apart old rollerskates to make skateboards.

Errrr… Vroom?

This little bit of would be viral social marketing has been pretty heavy handed, the pr firm has been sending clumsy emails trying to grease the wheels before the event. The whole thing is just so awkward and forced, but here it is on Skate and Annoy, so it worked on some level. I know that the auto makers in Detroit are in a tight spot, but maybe the money would be better spent trying to design a car that doesn’t look like a half a turd on wheels instead of paying Rob Dydrek to do a barrel roll over a skateboard and call it Extreme™. I just looked at some other pictures of the Chevy Sonic online and I guess it doesn’t look half bad sometimes. Looks like they’re going after the rice burner racers.

Lego Betties

Lego Skater Girl, from minifigure series 6.

“Who cares what anybody thinks? I skate for me!”

Some Minifigures skate for fame. Others skate for thrills. But for the Skater Girl, it’s all about having fun! It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks about her skating skills as long as she can feel two things: the wind whipping through her streaked hair, and her custom-painted board beneath her feet.

But sometimes the more you try to avoid attention, the more of it you end up getting. Thanks to her carefree attitude, the Skater Girl has gained a huge fandom devoted to discussing all of her latest skateboarding tricks and stunts. But she doesn’t care – they can say whatever they want, and she’ll just keep on doing her own thing her own way!

I’m not sure what’s up with that outfit. She looks liek some sort of goth Ronald McDonald.
