The Spits: EP
Label: Dirtnap

Just as some people thought the Ramones were actually retarded when they began to play out, some people are likely to think the Spits are the offspring of retard love, like an Ed Wood movie set to punk rock. The sound is low-fi sci-fi, lush but simple. Guitars with lots of effects and crappy keyboards. Sometimes sounding like the Ramones, sometimes like Bruce Haack on speed. The Spits are either true genius idiot savants or just plain dumb. No idea where this comes in the grand scheme of the Spits catalog as these guys have an annoying habit of producing multiple self-titeld releases. There’s a girl and a robot with a skateboard on the cover though. They often sneak a skateboard on the cover. This ep is pretty short, coming in at 17 minutes, with at least a minute of that being an introduction. Just enough to give you a taste and leave you wanting more. Standouts include Tuff News, Violence Cap, Greyhound Bound, and the cream of the crop, 1989. Recording quality varies but the level of fun is constantly high. Don’t let the Spits fool you. They may come off as punky thalidomide babies, but there’s more to them than meets the eye and ear. The Spits harken back to an era when punk was not a formula. Spits! Don’t swallow.
