Myrtle Creek photos on Northwest Skater

More Myrtle Creek shots

Dan Hughes left a link in the comments as I was getting to make this post, but that’s not going to stop me. I didn’t realize from our earlier shots that there were actually three full pipes at the Myrtle Creek, Oregon park. I thought the other one was just a small entry door. Turns out its a full pipe entrance to the a less-tranny section. I say “less-tranny” section because I wouldn’t exactly call it a “street” section. Head on over to Northwest Skater for the shots

It was sick seeing dan do his signature frontside airs out of the top of the big wall at duh-crik. That door full pipe is fun the bank from the “less-tranny” section leads you right into it

  2. is it just me or do the full pipes look really small, like hit your head small?

    the small one does..heh,heh

  4. Wow, those photos tell it all.

I really like the one that shows all of those kids standing on the tiny deck at the quarter in the “street’ area. They look like they are thinking”what the hell am I supposed to do with this?”

Even with that useless street course their are more people trying to ride it than are waiting to ride the giant pool.

When are the old school park designers ever going to learn about what everyone wants – flow and launch oportunities. Why dedicate so much coping covered area to old guys that aren’t even going to be riding in a couple of years?

correct me if im wrong but skatepark builders dont decide for everyone how the parks are built, dont they have design meetings where kids, old school guys, street dudes, vert dudes, etc come in and tell the people what they want?

i mean i agree with the argument that parks should be half tranny half street, but if the city wants mostly tranny then it makes sense to build it with mostly tranny

course daddyyo could be right, maybe grindline/dreamland are the skatepark nazis, they come into cities all over the northwest and force feed bowls and old school designs down the street skaters throats

  6. Im not sure about all cities but ive been involved somewhat in the upcoming Gresham Park and they did get community input on what they wanted to see in their skate park design. Still no clue how Myrtle creek went about it. Definitely a park i would like to check out though.

They are supposed to expand and build more like maybe an actual street course. This will probably be done a while down the road. They dont have any more money yet for the expansion. It is supposed to be done by another company not grindline. I think shaggy kinda winged it with the design. They got the full pipes from the city. They had been just sitting out in a dirt lot. Yes they are small(no ive never seen anybody hit their head but it is easy to loop out in em) but they are fun to ride and they are a lot easier to ride now with the current setup than they were when they were out in the dirt. They are more for rolling over for speed or maybe surfing through to hit the other wall but like i said they are fun to mess around on.

Yes most of the skaters from myrtle creek are street skaters. They do get in there from time to time though. Some of them are just learning to ride tranny but they seem to be into it. The bowl however does get a ton of use from the roseburg kids(there are a buncha kids from there that rip and cant get enough of challenging, big, crazy, vert, bowls etc etc) they are stoked on this park and learning new lines and new tricks on some of the tight, challenging, vert walls in the park.

Everything in a skatepark is street, or was inspired by street. Tranny is an example of rare street ( and backyard) features we’ve discovered through the years, but want more of, whereas ledges, benches, rails and angular planes are common outside of skateparks, so what’s the point of overdoing it? Last time I rode a vert ramp(several weeks ago)it was with a 12 year old who spent more time above the coping than on or below it. This is not an old vs. young issue.

  9. Thanks Kilwag! And it was a pleasure to ride Myrtle Creek. Crazy fun park with some very different lines.
