Montgomery Ward Christmas Book – 1965

Featured Skateboards: Hawthorne Fast Track Tiger, Hawthorne Exotic Wood, Black Beauty, Hawthorne Dart, Zippees All-Pro, Roller Derby

Montgomery Ward Christmas Book – 1965, page 398. 1965 was a huge year for skateboards in the Montgomery Ward catalog, they got a full page! Hawthorne skateboards appears to be a private label effort for Montgomery Ward, possibly made by Vita-Pakt (AKA Hobie) if that “Exotic Woods” model is an indication. Also of interest, they also offered a “build your own skateboard kit” comprised of trucks, wheels and bearings. All you needed was a piece of wood.

Page 398

The Fast Track Tiger deck looks familiar, but it’s hard to place. The Exotic Woods deck sure looks like a Hobie, right down tot he logo.

Here’s a detail of the Black Beauty, Dart, Zippees All-Pro (complete with “swivel trucks”, and the Roller Derby.

Zipees Sidewalk Surfer.

Roller Derby

Here’s an example of the Roller Derby skateboard. It was sometimes printed with the graphic the opposite direction. This board was also produced with “#10 Skatebaord” on the top, again with the graphic facing both ways.

Hawthorne Pine

This is one of the boards not shown, the “Budget 23-in. Enameled Blue Pine Board.” Photos courtesy of Vintage Skates Collection.

Zipees Olympic

Here’s the Zipees Olympic model not shown. These were produced in multiple color ways and at least 2 different sizes. You can see why they might have chosen not to show it when you take look at those single action trucks and wheels that look like they. might have been stamped.

Then there’s page 319, which has something called the “Fun Board” that let’s you sit and skate, as well as a balance board called the “Ride-a-roller.”
