Powell Park Skate Spot meeting

Portland Parks and Recreation is out of money. The red tape has been more or less cleared for the rest of Portland’s planned 19 skateparks, but there just isn’t any funding. Somebody in Southeast Portland must be doing some real grass roots work for this meeting to even be on the table. Unless I’m mistaken, Portland communities don’t have to wait for the city. If they can raise money, they can get it built. Powell Park was identified as a location for a skatespot. We are inviting you to hear more about the project timeline and a unique public/private partnership that will allow us to take steps toward implementing our Skatepark System Plan. The open house will provide information on the project, proposed timeline, fundraising goals, and give the community a chance to make their interest, support, ideas, and concerns heard. When: Thursday April 5, from 6-7:30 p.m. Where: Cleveland High School, Library (3400 SE 26th Ave.) Be there or fee free not to complain when it’s finished.

Another dinosaur

There’s more than one paleolithic skatepark out there waiting to be re-sessioned. This one near St. Jean de Luz, France might require a mountain board with some 100mm 55a wheels to get rolling. The asphalt looks very pitted. Pretty mild terrain for a skatepark, even by 70’s standard. Maybe the bigger stuff is under the dirt. Check it out on, errrr… FatBMX.

Friday T&A on S&A : Concrete Bodies

A very disturbing, depraved, lewd an lascivious photograph after the jump. Concrete can be inherently sensuous, but Spohn Ranch may just be the Larry Flint of skatepark companies. Shield your eyes to protect your delicate sensibilities after the jump.

Brandon, Florida

Here’s some pics of a soon to open Team Pain park in Brandon, Florida, on the outskirts of Tampa. Brandon is home to a few names you might have heard of, like Mike Frazier, and Anthony Furlong. None of these guys are in the pictures though. Ha. Despite the typical Florida high water table issue, they managed to get what looks like a really nice bowl (9″9′ Deep, 6″ shallow) in addition to the more street plaza-esque terrain. There’s colored concrete and a public arts grant to add some more color at a later date. The park is on track for a soft opening in March, so these guys must be doing some quality control.

Heaven forbid!

According to the Mercury News: Amid the worst budget crisis in city history, with even police officers worried for their jobs, city leaders last fall said San Jose’s gem of a skate park — California’s largest — would have to either be left as an unstaffed free-for-all, privatized or possibly even padlocked. Heaven forbid an unstaffed free-for-all! Then it would be just like every public skatepark in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Colorado, Illinois, Wisconsin, and probably a few other states too. – Thanks to Matthijs for the tip.

Dave’s for Sale: Pro Shop Adjacent

Checkout this somewhat funny, somewaht sad video ad for the sale of Dav’s Skatepark, which can be sublet for 2k a month, but if it doesn’t work out you can bail without penalty. Business tip: The reason your skatepark isn’t packed might have something to do with the fact that you are cranking “Under the Boardwalk” on the sound system. Bonus Pro Shop adjacent to the public area. 10 years in business! Holy cow. Lufkin Texas. Dave sounds like Kenny Powers.

Grindline in Laconner, Washington

This is a Grindline park in Laconner, Washington which is about a half an hour south of Bellingham. That’s Ted or possibly Fred on the backside boneless which was in fact a make, according to regular contributor John Aguilar. -Thanks! I saw pictures of a new Grindline park in Atlanta, GA (mainly in the street sections) that looked like it had some elements of a new direction for Grindline. Hard to tell from the tiny pictures though. Any of our Hotlanta readers want to scout it out?
