Former Breeder sings about skateboards
Kelley Deal from The Breeders and Kristian Svitak sing a jingle for Landshark wheels. There was a cool band in Illinois circa 82-83 called the Breeders. They had (among other things) some really good songs like Zen Punk and Uncool Slamming. You can download mp3’s of their 7″ with the band’s blessing from this article on Maximum Rock and Roll.
Toyota has a Phillips fetish
I saw a whole mess of Toyota marketing money that looked like it was trying to bite Jim Phillips’s style, but it’s probably legit.A quick search for Jim Phillips and Toyota reveals that he appears in a Toyota commercial that airs in Japan, so it’s highly believable that they also hired him to illustrate for the Extreme&trade:! sports market.
Last night for Thrashin the musical
I went last night and had a blast. There’s a live band but the cast doesn’t sing, so musical is a bit of a stretch. It’s a fast and loose production filled with a “special” effects bonanza, including the infamous scene where the Ramp Locals ramp gets burned down. The Corey Webster character is cherubic, if not down right portly, but it’s played to perfection. Also worth mentioning, the ladies are representing. Pretty much the only actual skating during the production is handled by an enthusiastic crew of female rippers. Highly recommended at Dantes, tonight.
Thrashin the Musical:
Live at Dantes August 18, 21, 22
Dang, we were supposed to help out with this. I started to get involved, had a couple email exchanges and a phone call, then they never followed through. It’s a conspiracy I tell ya… Oh well. No hard feelings. Check out the live musical version of Thrashin on stage at Dantes in Portland this Wednesday through Friday. There should be a ramp on stage and a live band too. The production company’s last effort was a gay version of Top Gun called Hot Gun, so this should be pretty fun. I mentioned it to real life Dagger Dave Duncan last week, and he said he’d be there for at least one performance, hinting that he may be a part of the production. Flyer after the Jump.
Crocs with street smarts?
Crocs, the manufacturer of those ubiquitous vinyl shoes has released a shoe they are marketing as “street smart.” I don’t think they are positioning the Devario as an actual skate shoe, but just look at that cute creature on the skateboard. Actually, it’s more creepy than cute. – Thanks to Zach Olsen for the tip.
Jill’s skateboard adventure
The auction for Jill’s skateboard adventure accessory set for your Charlie’s Angel doll has been removed but luckily for you (or unluckily, as the case may may be…) I requested a bigger version of the picture before it was pulled. Unfortunately, it’s got a gnarly hot spot from the flash. So yes, doll clothes on Skate and Annoy. – Thanks to Matthijs for the tip.
Nerfuls
You know, I’ve been to the 80’s, and I never saw these Nerful toys the whole time I was there. They even had TV commercials. Nerfuls were basically balls with faces that sat in little stand. Think of it as an old school Weeble with a custom egg cup. Stewie and Campy Nerful came with a skateboard.
Del Mar close out
You can buy this Tech Deck Del Mar pool replica for anywhere from $30-$60 online, or under $8 (not a typo) in store at select Target stores on clearance.
Coke Burn
The real burn is that this short movie is just an extrapolated version of a dandruff commercial circa 2001 or so. I thoght I posted it already but I don’t think I have. Basically, it’s a skateboarder with a flaming head raging through the streets. Pretty much the same thing, though years earlier and not as well shot or polished in post production. I’ll have to dig through my tapes when I get home and put it up. Once the visual effects turn on, all reality is thrown out the window, so even on some of the more believable sequences it’s impossible to tell what is real. What’s it for? A new product from Coca Cola called Burn Energy Drink. According to Creative Review: “The crux of our approach was to involve pre-existing communities in the creation and distribution of the key campaign assets Those sequences that are real and establishing shots were filmed in Mexico City. Watch it after the jump. [Source: Nerdcore] – Thanks to MC for the tip.
Monster Bandages
The novelty bandage business has really taken off. The Monsterville name is synonymous with first aid, so I’m sure these were worth the extra cost. One side of the sanitary wrapper is clear, so I didn’t have to open half of them to find one with a skateboard on it.
