Skate and Annoy: Daily

roodest-dood

Rood Dood

Dominion was a Canadian company that made completes during the 80’s. (Update: Wrong. Dominon was a roller skate company that branched out into skateboards in the 60’s) This one from ’88 says ‘rood dood’, wich should probably be pronounced as ‘rude dude’. To me it’s confusing, because ‘rood dood’ means ‘red death’ in Dutch (ain’t that so, Matthijs?). But the interesting thing here is that this board seems  a diss on vert skaters at a time when vert skating was reaching its end. The wall on this graphic is full of references to skateboarding and names of vert pros.  Take a closer look after the jump. The deck was for sale on eBay.

sa rood

‘Mangle Magnusson’ is written in black and you can read ‘Lester skates like a girl’ in light blue and there is ‘Hosoi toy’ or something under the lapper of the back truck.

rood3

On the nose: ‘You’re off your ramp, Hawk!’ Under the nosebone you can read ‘I luv Losi’ and ‘Ban Vans’ is written under the wheel.

sa rood nose

Yea, sure,  you get ‘street’ wheels on this complete. Also, we see ‘Grosso’ written in black, but no dissing or swearing here, I guess everybody likes Grosso.

sa wheel rood

‘Transworld’ in pink under the window with the scared guy and ‘You’re not so tuff, ruff’.’ Maybe a references to Billy Ruff.

sa middle rood

So Dominion is all about street skating, but the guy on the sticker seems to do a handplant here.

sa tail rood

And 2 more Dominion completes, as seen on Kijiji and Hookit:

question………..were these ever made by variflex also? i had one but i was thinking it was a variflex. this was also 35 or so years ago lol!

  • Totally off topic of Vert S8Tr Haters:

Some smart woman actually wrote her PhD thesis about Native American Skateboarders as a Subgroup/culture. Gotta love Sociology! Also heard about PhD thesis on people with Black Flag tattoos. None the less, Props to them All!!!!

  • Is that Jinx Junk under left rail?

  • Betsy, I’m liking your style…

  • Dominion was DSC Dominion Skate Co. They made ice skates, roller skates, and then in the 80’s skateboards, their biggest sellers were the alien invader and the Lazer. Total crap but a lot of kids learned how not to skate on these things…

  • My buddy had one of those…
    Funny board.

  • i’m just now seeing this, but i’m a bit confused………was this also a variflex option? i ahd one of these as a kid, & i swear it was a variflex board. i’m interested in buying one if anyone has any for sale.

My family owned Dominion Skate. It was started by my Grandfather in 1946 after leaving his uncle’s Skate company W.H. Dunne Skate co. that started in Toronto in the 1890’s. My grandparents and uncle that took over afterwards were very religious and would not use any language or images on their products that were to racy. I worked there in the 80’s as a teen and could very well could have screen printed that very deck. It was frustrating as a young person to know that not only was their marketing and branding was so conservative but the quality was aimed at selling to walmart and canadian tire trying to compete with Chinese products. My grandparents, uncle, his 2 sisters,(my mother was one) and my father while he was around all ran the place uncle my uncle closed it about 10 years ago.
