Man About Town

Yeah.. I’m at a loss about this one. Man About Town is a magazine with “Babes, bikes, battleships, booze, burgers, boards & beastly behaviour” but then this video sure is an odd one. I was intrigued with the juxtaposition of stlyes and eras, and ready to give it a thumbs up based purely on the execution of the concept, but the major continuity blunder in going from penny loafers to Vision Street Wear high tops bummed me out. I might have to invent an S&A award just so I can give it to this video. Make no mistake, I love it that people feel a need to make skateboarding videos like this. I wonder if Kilian Martin turned up to the shoot with a European carryall for a skatebag… Has anyone seen this magazine? I mean, I know people have seen it, but I’m asking our readers. 1. I aspire to be like this guy! The style, the grace, the socks!

  2. This video pretty much sums up freestyle skateboarding.

I don’t think it’s a “major continuity blunder”. Maybe the shoe brand didn’t allow for the shoes to be in the same shot with clothing brand X.Far fetched but it happens.Maybe Kilian wanted to make sure he landed his handstand.Props for cramming in the Visions for a number of seconds in a (moving) photoshoot that -as always- strives for perfection. And the carryall?
Are you childishly implying freestyle is gay? (OK,now I am implying handbags are gay…).Jou just can’t have it that a handsome,well-dressed spanish guy is singlehadedly upgrading the face of freestyling.Even though the freestyle is just a tool in this video.

    What’s the problem?

Do I sound pissed? I probably am stressed, yes.I read the ‘M’ word in that HOMOS cartoon and what I feared most is happening; I doubt my motivation to skate.I have all the time in the world but my longboard set-up still isn’t sorted out and I’ve skipped three sunny days already.Oh darn…

      ‘…You…’

  4. Killian rules, style leads, and improves.
I have never been that much on the “trasher” side – kinda ridiculous, and a bit annoying to see riders world wide wearing the same clothes …

That was a beautifullt shot and edited piece. It put 99% of skate videos to shame.

    1. You’re way to generous. It was beautifully shot and edited, yes, but it’s not a “skate video” by a long shot, it more of a fashion commercial with some skateboarding, and it’s way too short to compare to the rest of the genre.

no the point is, most skate videos are all shot using the same basic formula, and it’s getting really tired after all these years. This was a breath of fresh air, fashion commercial or not. It was shot by professionals who know what they are doing, and that makes a huge difference.

Thanks for reminding me of that one. I just went back and watched that piece again (Skate Escalation), and it’s second part, “Skate Regeneration”. They are absolutely amazing. Amazing.
