Tony Hawk – Guitar and Skateboarding Hero

Tony Hawk makes an appearance in this commercial for Guitar Hero World Tour. It has been suggested that this should be embarrassing for him, let’s see if we can dissect that theory. It could be embarrassing because Rock Band is obviously the better fake musical instrument game. Or maybe because Tony is the only sports celebrity in the commercial who has to drag along the trappings of the sport that made him famous. You don’t see Kobe with a basketball, Michael Phelps in speedo, or that other dude with whatever makes him famous, but for some reason Tony appears on a skateboard and in helmet, no less. It could be embarrassing because of the homoerotic implementations of four dudes dancing around together in their underwear. I’m sure he’s embarassed all the way to the bank though… Watch the commercial after the jump. – Thanks to… crud, can’t find the email, but thanks.

  1. Good on Tony. Love it that he is always wearing his helmet when he is on his board.

Good for him also to bring skateboarding into the mainstream where it needs to be.

The funny thing is that Tony would have been the only one I recognized is if Phelps hadn’t of been in the picture.

I’d rather see Tony “selling out” (as if) than Kolbe, the sexual pervert, in anything. Who is that other guy anyway?

  2. Phelps “is” in a Speedo and backdoor rapist Bryant is in those oversize boxers simulating his basketball shorts.

Who is this ad directed at? Tony Hawk and these other guys seem to appeal to the 25 and under crowd. Anyone under 30 even get the whole Risky Business reference here? Also, Tony is “rocking out” to the gritty, streetwise rock stylings of Bob Seger. Yuck. Maybe Seger is alright if you like saxophones.

  4. I know that New York is alright… If you like saxophones….

Hey kids! Go start a real band.

Lazy fuckin assheads. learn a real instrument or play a real video game. pushing arbitrary buttons while listening to music, WOW,what a dumb fucking game.

  6. colinwalshrules on December 18, 2008 - Reply

remember, always wear a helmet while drumming.

  7. This genre of game is actually fun. And believe it or not, it is driving sales of real instruments for kids. But yeah, it’s like having a game about skateboarding that is almost too realistic, why not just skate instead.

  8. Kilwag Says: And believe it or not, it is driving sales of real instruments for kids.

I hope so. The amount of time these kids spend playing the toy would be enough time to learn to play the instrument. Less if you want to play bass. ha ha

  9. The other dude is A-Rod from the Yankees. Baseball is cooler than skateboarding. Skateboarding is gross right now, for the first time in 25+ years of skateboarding I try to be a closet skater. The more I hide it the less I have to talk to people like daddyYo.

  10. MommaNo – what makes you so ashamed of skateboarding?

Is it because skateboaders (as represented by Tony Hawk and that red head kid) are relatively decent people and not steroid addicts or rapists?

Was was it in the last 25 years that made skateboaring cool?

  11. I like Bob Seger. I like Saxophones. I also like Fear.
However, I don’t like Pete Seeger.
I think the “Risky Business” angle of that commercial is trying to appeal to the Yuppi parents of that time, who will buy the game for their kids who will probably never learn to play a real instrument.
I think video games and computers are cool. It’s the amount of time we spend on them that is a waste, when we could be doing something productive.
My screen time is done for today. Time to face the real world.

Bob Seger was rad at one point. Sure, he has sucked since about 1971 but check out “2+2=?”, “East Side Story” and “Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man”. This is your music history lesson for the day.

  13. I looked up some info on A-Rod. It seems like he is a relatively decent person. No drug or rape charges.

So, three of the four athelete in this commercial are respectable adults. Excellent.

I guess they had to put Bryant in basketball shorts rather than underwear to the avoid any association with the whole “rape a groupie but get off because you are a good basketball player” thing.

If you think I don’t like the punkism of skateboarding – get me started on the holy trinity of professional sports.

  14. bob seger? you mean the guy on full house?

  15. jakeferranti on December 18, 2008 - Reply

haha, nah Bob Seger(and the silver bullets) is that corny singer who gave us “night moves” and “old time rock and roll” or “rock and roll music” or one of those songs that says rock and roll 50 times in the chorus. Bob Saget is the guy from full house and a lame, lenny bruce wannabe. that mix up made me laugh, then i crapped my pants,so thanks alot LP.

  16. jake, it was supposed to be sarcastic, but cool glad you got a laugh.

The Briefs have a great song called “Bob Seger Must Die”. I agree with every word.

  18. I can’t take it anymore. I must respond but am doing so under an alias.

DaddyYo said “I looked up some info on A-Rod. It seems like he is a relatively decent person. No drug or rape charges.” He also said, “If you think I don

I dont think I can play those games anymore with real guitars in my room saying “play me” the drums look like they would be fun though.

  20. what exactly is the holy trinity of sports?

  21. bmx, razor scooters, and mountain boards. wait, where do roller blades fit in there?

  22. I wanted to say holy trinity of “pro” sports. while I have dealt with sponsored razor kids, i don’t think they are in the top three. bmx, maybe. mountain boarding is kinda “fringe”. so there is room for roller blades.

i hate video games, and i especially hate these video games where you can pretend like you’re good at something

as far as tony hawk? whatever i think its expected that he does something like this, he’s just that guy for skateboarding, you want a golfer you call up tiger woods, you want a skateboarder you call up tony hawk

i think daddyo should have been in the commercial, he could have mountain boarded into the room and introduced mountain boarding to the mainstream where it should be, but then there would only be 2 out of 4 respectable adults in the commercial, which matters for some reason i guess (???) hahaha whatever man im just playin, dont take that seriously and get all pissed off

i would rather devote my time to playing a real instrument not a plastic toy. besides, my hand eye coordination sucks anyways.

Hey Tony D, Thanks for the Fear reference.

  26. hey, hey, hey hey hey, hey, bomb the russians, have another beer, and eat your beef baloney, and fuck christmas.

  27. I think I’ve been over referenced…. Ha! “Let’s have a war!”

  28. the trouble with daddys today, the mouth dont stop! strangle me that bitch and leave him in a ditch.

  29. im leeving now, so don’t philo this board with your spit, stix.

  30. curtis – “what exactly is the holy trinity of sports?”

    Football, baseball and basketball.

All of them are, in some ways, worse than punk skateboarding.

  31. those are really fun games, even though you should wear a helmet to play tackle football. I don’t watch them on TV, so I see nothing wrong with them. is punk a way to judge skateboarding as a whole? or just a style of skating?

  32. Simply Stupid on December 19, 2008 - Reply

I loved it when A-Rod kicked the shit out of his wife and went to jail.

  33. ..Or when he ditched his kids to chill with Madonna on Thanksgiving. He’s not a punk skateboarder with punk values from a punk single mom so the statement that he’s an alright guy still punk stands. Punk punk

  34. Didn’t know that about A-Rod. He sounds like the typical fat cat sports industrialist.

Are there any decent people in any sport anymore? I’m sure they are but you never hear about them be cause they don’t “sell papers”.

  35. Simply Stupid on December 19, 2008 - Reply

Yeah ditching his kids is awesome. It makes him an outstanding citizen in my eyes. Very John McCain.

  36. DocMurdock on December 19, 2008 - Reply

I wish they were all dancing around in speedos

  37. tiger woods is a seemingly decent man, yet i dont really think naming an organazation after yourself or whatever is more about the kids than the person. tony hawk can do bagel bites commercials forever for all i care. he stuck with the sport when most abandoned it. he can sell out and still have cred to me. he is a very innovative skater.

If you want upstanding citizens in sports, I have your answer…

    http://www.worldcurling.org/

  39. I love curling.

  40. Curling is, as far as I know, the only Olympic sport where the elite “athletes” drink and smoke while competing (well, maybe snowboarding, but they have to hide it). I can understand why skaters would feel a bond with curlers.

And LP, how can you watch that Guitar Hero ad and still have any respect for Hawk? I didn’t even mind the Huck Jam vitamins, but this commercial is a disgrace.

  41. I’d like to see the girls on the Sweedish curling team naked.

  42. and Kobe is a crack baby.

  43. oh mac, like i said, tony deserves to make all the money he can because he stuck with skating when so many others quit. tony made skateboarding acceptable to the mainstream–you may say thats bad, but we wouldnt have so many municipal skateparks then either, which is terrific. i’d rather skate at an office park midday and get kicked out, but at least i can always go to the skatepark and not be hassled.

  44. I don’t have a problem with Hawk making money, and I agree on what he’s given to skating as well as his incredible talent, work ethic, and longevity. I’m a Hawk fan. This is why I’m so disappointed in this commercial. One would think, at his level, as a highly respected athlete and businessman and the face of his sport, that he would have some kind of approval rights before the ad comes out. He looks like a complete and utter douchebag, as do the other guys. I cannot believe that any of these guys saw the cut of this and said, “that’s awesome!” Much more likely is that they called their agents and said, “you can’t let them release this!” My problem is simply that this commercial makes 4 of the top athletes on the planet look like total idiots. Maybe they deserve it, I don’t know. I do like the one with Heidi Klum, though.

  45. Damienhialation on December 20, 2008 - Reply

I see all of your points. This commercial is obviously way more disgraceful than those Cinematic Masterpieces that Tony Hawk did for “Pizza Pockets”.

  46. tony wears his helmet in the air on a vert ramp so us mainstream skaters know it’s him. in this stunt he wears it because he is out of his element on flat with that dorko drum set on. that is so sketchy for him,

  47. i think that tony was kind of being sarcastic or purposely retarded, as kind of a joke. but thats just what i think. make no mistake, tony is very smart and wouldnt self-insult his intelligence on purpose…but maybe im reading too much into it and he’s just a stupid ass sellout. but the bagel bites thing was way more embarrassing in my book.

  48. Of course those guys are all hamming it up. I’m not particularly offended by this, it’s kind of clever actually, the idea that famous sports stars still want to pretend to be rock stars. It’s goofy for sure, but harmless.
