Les Terribles are a French band specializing in 1960’s garage-y pop. A lazy comparison to Stereo Total would be appropriate if Stereo Total stuck to traditional instruments and old pop songs. Yeah, that’s lazy. The tunes on Les Terribles all sound like they could have been plucked from some 60’s era pseudo beatnik beach swinger movie, and that’s a good thing. Oh yeah, it’s all in French, which adds to the novelty, but doesn’t make it necessarily any more of a chore to listen to if you don’t understand it. The somewhat vague press sheet makes it appear that Les Terribles are a side project of members of other French bands including the very enjoyable new wavers Operation S. Good luck on finding anything on the web about Les Terribles, as it appears to be a name associated with some sort of famous (or often used) name for a group of French mal contents, or radical group. Again, my high school French escapes me. The liner notes are nonexistent, and the CD just says “Recorded in France.” No matter, just put it on and enjoy. Highlights include the ironically titled opener C’est Fini a cover of the Kinks All Day and All of the Night, Chante , Pourquoi Je Pluere, and more.
