Action Sports Alliance

Alliance of Evil?

This is a couple of weeks old. I had decided to ignore it, but I was exploring the French-Canadian Versus Skatezine which has a heavy Don’t Do It Army presence. I decided to see what Birdo was up to, and it turns out the Don’t Do It campaign has branched out into the whole action sports industry. One of the first things I clicked on ended up targeting Nike’s entry into the snowboarding boot market, which in turn reminded me of the Winter Dew Tour commercials on TV that have an action sequence of Shaun White skateboarding and morphing into snowboarding. The Dew Tour has a new logo, perhaps coinciding with the creation of the Action Sports Alliance. Make no mistake about it, despite a name that sounds like an operation for activism, outreach, or a rider’s union, it’s a company jointly owned by NBC Sports and MTV.

Alli is a global business that joins the former Action Sports Tour properties (AST) with Maloof Money Cup, AMA Motocross Championship and King of Wake series to create the most diverse and robust action-sports offering in the world. The new umbrella brand, which will continue to be co-owned by NBC Sports and MTV, will offer a schedule of seven national and international action sports tours and events, multimedia content and production, a digital hub and consumer-facing lifestyle brand.

Check out the press release. No word on the official position of the Don’t Do It Army.

DIY concrete in HR

Concrete avarice

Somewhere in the land of amusement park skate terrain, an individual, or individuals have decided that they need more concrete. The thinking goes, “The skatepark is fine, but it’s not mine!” Actually, this came from Carl Warren, and was labeled as a “side project.” He didn’t say, and I didn’t think to ask him. I don’t know if it’s DIY or not, but it certainly looks like a private situation. More shots after the jump. Go for it!

SOTW 1-5-08: Sign in Bowl - Ron Emory

SOTW 1-5-08: More Sign In bowl.

After seeing himself in last week’s shot of the week, Runaway insisted that we at least use a good shot. That wasn’t a dig a Peter Dietsches’ photo skills, Keith was just being self deprecating. In order to detract attention from his corn rows, Keith furnished two great shots of TSOL member Ron Emory at the same bowl. Above is a close up of one of them. Love the debris flying off, and if you can believe it, it’s a make of a backside edger that took a turn for the hairy. Word is he made those regularly. Keith said Ron owned that pool, and you’ll be inclined to agree if you check out the full frame Shot of the Week as well as a bonus shot after the jump.

SeaSk8 replacement designs

Seattle SeaSk8’s Replacement

The final design and contractor for the replacement of Seattle’s skatepark that was dozed by Bill Gates has been chosen. You can check out the renderings or follow the saga at SeattleSkateparks.org. It’s a newline design, but who is the build contractor? For some reason it’s under wraps until the contract is signed. Construction is supposed to start in the spring. What I want to know is where are they growing those alien-like blurry trees that are showing up in the renders?

– Thanks to Scott Shinn for the tip.

Rain delay

If you’re not into the wacky snow skate technology, or it’s raining instead of snowing, you have to make your fun. Kevin Porterfield from Dokument skate shop in Salem, OR threw together a quickie quaterpipe for some indoor action. Catch two photos after the jump.

snowskate

Those things work?

Carl Warren sent in a photo of on again, off again contributor Mike Estes on some sort of contraption called a snow skate. I’ve seen pictures of these things, couldn’t see how they would be rideable, but apparently they are. Are there truck-like mechanisms on these things? No bindings either. It looks like a tiny ski mounted to a skateboard like a hydrofoil. This is exactly why we kicked him off of Skate and Annoy. What’s that? I’m being told here that he actually quit. See the full frame shot after the jump.

30 year old snake run in Belgium

BMX’ers and skaters don’t have a beef in Belgium. Hell, they even share their websites. Bocal Mostard (translation?) is a collective of skateboarders and BMX riders. They met together to celebrate the 30 year anniversary of a snake run in the city of Liège, Belgium. It looks like there was a mass thrash, art events and live bands. Sounds pretty good in any language. Check it out.

Momentum Japan Tour video

Momentum in Japan

Yes, it’s officially international day here on SnA. We’re suckers for far away spots that we’ll never see. Check out the Momentum Japanese tour video. There are some cool and unusual spots, and of course, well, the skating. The spot above reminds me of Palma de Mallorca, Spain while Chris Haslam calls to mind Montgomery Burns channeling Howard Hughes. “Get these Kleenex boxes off my feet! – Certainly, sir. And, uh, the jars of urine? – Oh, we’ll hang onto those.”

Le coping dans La Caverene

October of last year we published some pics of a DIY concrete project in France called La Caverne that prompted one of our smart-assed readers to comment “put some coping on that shit.” Salah Mehdi sent in some pictures of just that. I don’t know if “coping” is a masculine or feminine noun, for some reason they didn’t cover that in high school French classes.
