Stumptown Coffee
Another marketing piece from Stumptown Coffee with a skateboard. I’m not sure if that’s supposed to be a generic older lady or a man in drag, but it works for me. Tim Root on the pen and ink again. – Thanks to Skidzilla for the tip.
Oh, the humanity!
The backwards truck phenomenon happens all the time when marketers attempt to use skateboards without consulting an actual skateboarder. How did it apparently happen to Rob Dyrdek’s Street League Skateboarding, an organization dedicated to presenting “real” skateboarding? You know he must have been bummed the moment he realized it. The reflective nature of the trophy makes it hard to see definitively, but it sure looks like it’s backwards, Randals notwithstanding. Because we’re not all sour grapes here, there’s a bunch of well done photos of the latest Street League contest. Nyjah Huston is the champ, in case you wanted some actual results. I’ve added a “Backwards Skateboard Syndrome” to the tags. When I get a chance I’ll go back and retag some of the old posts with examples. – Thanks to Seth Levy for the tip.
Melody will get yer goat, but you’ll be Happie
Pretty easy to have the record if you’re the only one doing it. I predict Dyrek will be visiting the Goat mills soon to make sure this, uh, respected honor belongs to a real skateboarder. Basically, the goat jumps on the skateboard and stands still until the momentum dies. I think I’ll see if I can train a squirrel to do the same thing so I can get on TV. Yes, this story was picked up by local news networks. Ladies and gentlemen, the Guiness World Record holding skateboarding goat. [Source: Boingboing] – Thanks to Danimal and others for the tip.
Meet Jacob
He works in the web marketing department of American Apparel. There’s pictures of him skating on the American Apparel web site and newsletter. I thought that board was the old designer SMA board at first glance, the one with the feathers. Jacob is seven clicks to your left on the Back to School/Reality look book.
There are rebates and there are rebates
Just as it happened to Benji Galloway, it happened to Jeff Hedges too. Some guy shows up at skatepark and snaps a few pictures, then offers you a couple hundred bucks if you sign a release. You never know where it will end up. Sometimes you’re on a TV box, sometimes it’s website or a mail in rebate. The product is an LED light from a company called Manfrotto. The rebate was spotted in the wild at a cmaera shop in SLC, and you can download a pdf from venerable B&H Photo. Ffej was not bothered by it, but he said he might look for a one-time use clause if he gets approached again. Never trust a photographer. You can trust me though, I’m non-practicing. – Thanks to Brian Baade for the tip.
Maxine at the Olympics
I watched quite a bit of the Olympics, enjoyed some of the action. I did not enjoy the shitty coverage courtesy of NBC. I think I was a week into it before I realized there were other events besides gymnastics and swimming. One thing I did not miss, skateboarding in the olympics. I poached this Maxine cartoon from the Maxine facebook page via Nick Dawson.
Spongebob McRad
It’s Spongebob Squarepants on a skateboard, available as a Happy Meal toy. Thanks to Colin Sharp for bringing his whole family to McDonalds on a weekly basis and photographing this for me, becasue I wouldn’t be caught dead feeding this to my kids. – With apologies to McRad.
Battle of the blands
Enjoy, if you can, these two music videos with downhill skateboarding themes. I think the first one is actually a commercial for Kia. The first is Ivan Gough & Feenixpawl ft. Georgi Kay – In My Mind (Axwell Mix) [OFFICIAL VIDEO] Thank god. I’ve been burned on those unofficial videos before. I never got my money back, it was a hard learned lesson. The second video is for the song Puppy by Netsky. You can relax though, it’s another official video. (Don’t get me started…) – Thanks to Matthijs for having poor taste in music.
Authorized Devo
It’s another Kickstarter project, this time to fund the final editing an film clip usage rights for a documentary on Devo. I mention it here on Skate and Annoy partly because they brought Tony Hawk in to comment on the Freedom of Choice video, but mostly because I love DEVO. They make a big deal about this being an authorized documentary, as compared to the Devo biography which the band originally cooperated with but ended up denouncing. I spoke to Gerald Casale about it and he said it was “all bullshit.” (Yes, I am almost that cool, but not really, I just met him at a bar after he did guest vocals with Portland’s legendary Punk Group.) Regardless of Casale’s opinion of the book, We Are Devo! is a must read if you believe in Devolution. The documentary looks good from the preview clips, I just hope they don’t water it down with too many celebrity appearances. Iggy Pop, sure, I’d love to hear about how he turned David Bowie on to Devo, (or maybe even how he turned David Bowie on) but Tony Hawk seems kind of, well, gratuitous. Surely someone like Steve Olson or Duane Peters would have…
Errr… Grapple! (?)
Grapple. Gorilla apple? No, that would be Gorapple. Grape apple? That makes no sense, but it hasn’t stopped someone from developing a grape infused apple. USA! USA! USA! USA! Now they just need to make a baby version. Nobel Peace Prize or sign of the apocalypse? – Thanks to Justin Owen for the picture.
