Wonder Woman

It’s coming soon

Finally got a decent capture of this old Wonder Woman episode. I’m distilling most of the non-skateboarding parts out of edit. There are bits out there on the Interwebs&trade, but this will be the most complete. Wait for it. It’s worth it.

Green skateboarding in Concrete Wave

Green is the new Black: Part 2

Green skateboards and now green skateparks? In Portland there are two new skateparks breaking ground in 2008. Both proposals mentioned a need to minimize the environmental impact, mostly concentrating on water runoff. Seems like a minor part of the project to me, as none of these parks are located near waterways. But what do I know? I’m not one of those science doohickeys. Coincidentally, Airspeed Skateparks has the contract for one of those new parks and they are also featured in the newest issue of Concrete Wave Magazine. The article titled The New
Cooldown – Skate Green: Design and Build Smart
is available as a PDF download. There’s more to this green skatepark than you might imagine. Aside from skateparks the article also talks about sustainability in skateboards, clothing and shoes.

Comet Skateboards on Invention Nation

Green is the new black

There are quite a few bamboo based boards out there. According to some sources (more on that in a few) the skateboard industry has surpassed the hardwood floor industry as the number one world consumer of hard maple trees. lets put that into perspective. If properly cared for, a hardwood floor can last 100 plus years in house, while a skateboard isn’t going to last a year unless you’re just using it for transportation. Now consider that a maple tree takes 28 years to mature for use commercially. Sustainability is big in industry right now. It’s even creeping into skateboarding, mostly through the red headed stepchild of skateboarding, longboarding. I’ve seen a few of them up close and they don’t look quite ready for prime time, at least as far as short boards go. It sure would be great if a decent shortboard could be made out of bamboo. There’s a TV program on the Science Channel called Invention Nation where a bunch of hippies the show’s hosts travel the country in a biodiesel powered van and investigate cottage industry inventors of green technologies. It’s a short bus, but it’s green, not yellow. Comet Skateboards was featured on the Less Landfill episode for work on a bamboo composite board. It doesn’t air again until March 17, but you can watch it here.

Skateboarding in TV commercials

Commercial two-fer

What is that sassy wench trying to tell you? Isn’t it already completely obvious that hot chicks collect skateboards and eat cheeseburgers? Sometimes a skateboard can be the central element of a commercial, but more and more they are becoming just a small part of a bigger concept, getting lumped in the background with a bunch of hobbies whereas they used to be more of a crazy radical lifestyle commentary. So here’s two currently running commercials that feature skateboarding, one from Gatorade and one from McDonalds.

Hawk vs. Stork

Hawk vs. Stork

Tony Hawk is so famous he even made it on Celebrity Baby Blog, where they point out that he’s expecting his fourth child with his third wife. That means another appearance on MTV’s Cribs must be in the works since the first two wives got theirs. Do you want to watch video of tony Hawk rubbing his wife’s belly? (No.) He’s surprisingly jovial considering the freelance TMZ cameraman/celebrity stalker is a complete moron. “Are you happy with how the elections turned out?” Seriously? There’s more, but it’s for fanboys only. I believe this is exactly kind of crap that Paying in Pain is warning you about. – Thanks to… my wife(!) for the tip.

Perry Bible Fellowship

PBR? No, PBF on Skate Churches

The Perry Bible Fellowship is a weird little comic. Rather than do any of the work myself (Far Side on bad acid-Oops!), here’s what Publishers Weekly has to say:

Despite its name, the comic has little to do with Christianity, save the occasional strips blending the religious and the profane. With an artistic style that can vary dramatically from strip to strip, the weekly comic explores “the concept of foolhardy notions incurring terrible, unexpected outcomes” through the lens of Gurewitch’s distinctive humor, described by turns as twisted, cerebral and sweet.

The frames above are three out of four of the Perry Bible Fellowship comic titled Preach Skate. Make sure you hit the link to see the punchline.

Ryan Sheckler in Seventeen Magazine

Ryan Sheckler tours with Winger

Yes, I paid $2.99 to make fun of Ryan Sheckler, so who is the bigger loser? Me, by most standards. Sheckler makes no less than two appearances in the February 2008 issue of Seventeen Magazine, and they’ve even got an online extra.

Secrets of Skateboarding

Killer skate vids and wheelchair ramps

Another huge moneymaking plan that someone else beat me to the punch on. I guess I’d better get moving on my 900 phone-skating number. Secrets of Skateboarding wants your email address, which they swear will not be sold or misused, and you gotta believe them. If you cough up your email (or any email) you can get access to the page where you get the scoop on Tony Waters’ success plan (He studied Tony Robbins!) for becoming a kickass skater. Revealed… An effective technique to improve at skateboarding without actually skating. Although the secrets apparently fit in a software box, if you buy now you’ll also get a chance to download for free, How to Shoot a Killer Skate Video. Here’s a free tip from me – Step one: Ditch the VHS camera. Then there’s what looks like the wheelchair access version of Professional Ramp Plans. How much will all this bounty cost you? Only $27, and they’ve got an affiliate program too! I need to get signed up for that. Who is Tony Waters? One Clue: “Underground Skater Finally Comes Out!” He’s still a little shy, as he only appears in one small photo wearing sunglasses in front of his mom’s garage in the suburbs. Speaking of techniques for improving your skateboarding without actually skating, some crazy fool is giving away his tips for success! Check out the video for How to be awesome at skateboarding after the jump. – Thanks to Griptape Flip and others for the tip.

Eggheads on skateboarding

Sucking the joy out of skateboarding, one egghead at a time

ShOP stands for Sheffield Online Papers in Social Research (er… SHOPSR?)

Sheffield Online Papers in Social Research (ShOP) is an online forum for the publication and distribution of peer-reviewed work in the Social Sciences and related disciplines. Started by the Postgraduate community at Sheffield University, Sheffield Online Papers in Social Research publishes:

Articles which provide a detailed, systematic and theoretically based analysis of the phenomena of society

Contributions to conceptual, theoretical or methodological debates within the social sciences

Studies and articles relating to current social and political issues

Back in 2003, ShOP Issue 7 focused on skateboarding. I’ve been know to ramble a bit too much on esoteric skateboarding rants, but ShOP has six papers with a total of 134 pages covering various social aspects of skateboarding from an anthropological and zzzzzzzzz……
