DIY concrete float

Confusion has simple but rad little plan for recycling an old skateboard into a concrete float. You can use the float to make more things to skate on, to wear out more skateboards, to make more concrete floats, to make more things to skate on…

The Sean Cliver ”Driveway sun tilt method”

This quick sketch from Blockhead artist Ron Cameron shows the best way to shoot a board at home. Ron is working on a book and sent me this so I could photograph a super nice and rare Blockhead deck I found  in an old toy store in Belgium last year. The method works just fine and is tested and approved by Sean Cliver himself.

FLORIDA FUN – radical free (I´m flyin´…) 7”

It´s about one year ago now that I finished my book about what I dare to call Vintage Skaterock and a few weeks ago I discovered the first record I missed out in the book (thanks to Hampuz for the tip!). I am talking about a crazy skateboard tune out of Sweden by a band named FLORIDA FUN.

If you do, It’s illegal

You many not see many kids with skateboards, zooming down your street. And if you do, it’s illegal.

100% Pure Fun publisher Larry Ransom uploaded some old VHS capture of a news story about the banning of skateboards in Lockport, New York, circa 1988. The best quote (and delivery) is in the opening 5 seconds, but it’s got plenty of other audio gold, strange inflections and hip lingo.

DOS Bowl Openings

Portland’s DOS bowl has openings, and is in fact in need of some new blood, even as the weather turns dryer here. Your membership gives you entrance from 6am until 3am every day. That’s 21 hours of skating a day, rain or shine. That’s Larry Martin enjoying said access. Larry gives free sweeper lessons weekly. The photo is presented here with the kind permission of The Skateboard Archives, without knowing it. Hey Michael, is it OK if I post this?

Cross Training

Two instances of world class athletes using skateboards for cross training purposes. First up is 10k Olympic gold medalist Mo Farah allegedly building balance on a skateboard, though admittedly just an experiment, and more likely just a photo op for the The Oregonian. On the right, Daniel Woods “prepares” for the 2010 Bouldering World Cup at a skatepark. With the event just two days after the video footage was shot, he was probably just trying to relax, get his mind off the competition, and of course, not get hurt! Video footage of Daniel after the jump – Just a tiny bit of skating and a lot of bouldering, but it’s some amazing bouldering footage.

– Thanks to Jim Lilly and Chris Yeager for the tips.

Unheard Invitational

May 4th, in Portland, at the Unheard Ramp, soon to be renamed the sweat box. It’s the Unheard Invitational. $2000 in prize money. Sponsored by a brewery? Yes, Hopworks. I (un)heard the HUB night raised about 3K in sales and donations for Powell Blvd. Skate Spot.
