Maniac mania
Pacer was a brand from the UK that produced some decent boards during the late 70s and early 80s. Towards the end of the 80s they started to make rather crappy completes (pics after the jump). Still, the decks in the picture above (both from eBay) are definitely bootlegs from the original 1988 ‘Maniac’ deck, designed by Doug Cameron. The left one has the typical flat pig-like shape that most of the very cheap decks have and still have, but the funny thing about this one is that the front picture was stolen from a 1987 Valterra team deck called … ‘Ramp Champ’. The complete on the right seems to be a Rusher Sports, which surprises me, since Rusher Sports was a well-known company that had their own designs and the shape was different than this one, if I remember well. I have never seen a Rusher Sports that copied from the big brands, so maybe it’s a Rusher Sports/Pacer bootleg.
Um yeah
UM YEAH FILMS Presents – “Cuatro Suenos Pequenos” (four small dreams) – A new skate film – Visual Audio Experiment by Thomas Campbell. This 21 minute movie was shot entirely on 16mm film in a dream scene scenario that blends reality, surreality and a skate adventure starring Javier Mendizabal and Madars Apse. This film captures Javier Brushing his teeth, slobbering on his pillow, bedding down with a beautiful brunette. Also Javi running into Madars Apse in his dream, they skate over volcano’s, thru the woods and into cities of Spain,The Canary Islands,Mallorca, The Basque country and California. This film has a completely original soundtrack by the critically acclaimed Basque super group “Chiwoks.” And besides the usual unusual camera perspectives you expect from a Thomas Campbell film. French Fred is also is on board Lending his iconic visual wizardry to this cauldron of the bizarre, beauty and gnar. And now you know as much about this project as I do. I had a hard time picking one still frame to represent this post, I would watch the trailer if I were you. This looks very interesting. They had a showing in Paris with the band who scored the music performing the soundtrack live.…
DIY in North County
Ryan Moran sent in pictures of a sanctioned DIY spot in a rural area of North County, San Diego area of California. The community forked over some land behind the ball fields, but it’s up to the skaters to raise the money. They must be doing pretty good because they just had their first pour.
Burka Board
These two boards (Burka and Prayer) were created by Juan James and auctioned off to benefit Skateistan. Sure, these are a few years old, but it’s still a good reason to check out Skateistan again.
Swank Zine: NSA Issue (1986)
Just added to the Zines Gallery. Swank Zine NSA Issue from 1986.
Crappy skateboard of the month
Ming Ta Supply is/was located in California and they produced Enzo boards from 1991 untill 1997. They couldn’t have chosen a worse moment and using graphics of vert skaters on their boards was definitely a bad move. This is maybe why I could only find one Enzo complete and it was for sale on eBay. Ming Ta Supply also seemed to deal in furniture, building materials, Christmas decoration, sporting articles, toys … I wonder where those came from.
Fun while it lasted
Riding my bike home from work the other day I saw a guy with a fancy camera filming some skateboarding, so I stopped to talk to Tom Bender. He’s premiering a video in Portland this sumer called Fun While it Lasted. You can watch a short trailer courtesy of Transworld and another compilation of offcuts and extras after the jump.
Fake Boy
This is a pretty recent Flame Boy graphic on the same old, pig-like-shape that most of the fakes have. Companies have been producing these completes from the mid 80s untill now, without changing anything on its crappiness. How long will this insanity go on? I guess for a while, if you take a look at the new rip-offs on Alibaba. Anyway, the hairy Flame Boy looks absolutely ridiculous, although it fits well on this piece of thrash. If you want your kid to love his iPad even more, you should consider buying this for €10 on leboncoin.fr.
SkateZines.com
New web site from the co-creator of Skate and Annoy – SkateZines.com is a simple directory of current skate zines and where to get them. Please do not confuse this with a gallery, its just a listing, plain and simple. If you’d like to get the latest issue of your zine, or anyone else’s for that matter, (print, pdf download or online) listed, just drop by the contact page. Please help spread the word! I imagine there will be a redesign coming, but I just wanted to get it up and running, as I’ve had the domain name registered for a few years now. Eventually I’ll pull the most recent image from SkateZines.com and display it linked here on the sidebar of S&A, so zines will get double exposure.
50 / 50
Larry Martin did 50 tricks on his 50th birthday. Not too shabby old man. I’m doing the same thing on my next birthday… but I’m uh, I must be turning 6.
