Malaysian DIY

Looks like they took over a basketball court, somewhere in Malaysia. As seen at the Skate Malaysia blog. Although it appears to be some sort of pay-to-play setup.

Well, its open for public and its in Sungai Petani, Kedah. Pay RM10 for lifetime access.

So that’s about 3 USD for a lifetime membership. The Interwebs tells me a domestic beer costs about the same.

A penny suit for your thoughts

On the left: 1995, Simon Woodstock skating for Vans with a ‘penny board’ in his first penny suit (as seen in Skate Book 2, p.106).

On the right: March 2014, Simon visiting Lance Mountain Jr.’s art show in style with his new penny suit and a penny bike (at the Seeing Things Gallery  in San Jose).

(DOS) Trusty Bowl Open house

Portland’s DOS Bowl is going through some changes. The new name Trusty Bowl, reflects the new management – Trusty Switchblade. The bowl will now be open to the public on certain days, including a monthly BMX only night. The changes are necessary to keep the whole thing afloat year round. Membership dips drastically in the spring and summer, and the guys on the lease have to foot the bill. If you want specifics, you can ask all the questions you want at the Open House this Saturday, April 5th from 5-8. Members only party afterwards.

Mouse vs Mouse

Chuck E Cheese squares up against the venerable Mickey Mouse. Mickey Mouse certainly holds the edge in sheer quantity of appearances on a skateboard, but Chuck has the advantage in this presentation. Actually, he kind of looks like a skatepark hipster. That’s a pencil sharpener on the bottom of his skateboard, not a battery pack for an electric motor. Production date on both of these items are unknown.

Psycho Stick bootleg

This crazy thing is obviously a copy of a 1988 Vision Psycho Stick.  The psycho on the Free Former  looks even more mental than the original one on the right (as seen in eBay Watch August 2010). The guys at Free Former must have liked their psychos, since they did a Gator bootleg too. Spotted this one on eBay.

Burnquist Dreams Big

Bob Burnquist and crew (including Jeff King) built a classy looking floating miniramp as part of a PR campaign to (Warren) bolster California tourism. Visit California, where all your dreams can come true. This commercial speaks directly to 1984 Kilwag. I remember my first time in California, actually visiting some of the places I’d read about and seen in Thrasher like venice Beach, the Nude Bowl, and random grade schools with banks. It was like making a pilgrimage to Mecca. Dream Big was filmed in 2013, but I didn’t see it until recently. It looks super fun, kind of small, almost anticlimactic in the context. Maybe their budget didn’t allow them to dream bigger. Still, it’s great that things like this are being built. Don’t forget to visit California.
