Tomorrowland of yesteryear

Just got back from SPRING BREAK whoo-hoo! Show me your… kids, 5 and younger. First trip to Disneyworld. It was fun, and the kids loved it, but somewhere around 13 hours into it (drive time not included) my 3 year old turned away from the Main Street Electrical Parade and whined “why are we still here?” Disneyland made a liar of me. Two big things I got my kids stoked to see were no shows. The part of the Haunted Mansion at the end where the ghosts end up in the car sitting next to you.. broken or discontinued. In stead there was some really lame one dimensional cartoons projected on the wall as you went past. The second disappointment? Midway through the day I realized I couldn’t find 20,000 leagues under the sea. I told my kids we were going on a submarine and might get attacked by a giant squid. I mentioned it to an old timer who struck up a conversation with me, and his wife laughed at me. She said it had been gone a really, really long time. What? Oh yeah, skateboarding. One thing that hadn’t changed, Tomorrowland Speedway. Even as a kid I didn’t…

Skateboard lockers

The Skateboard Locker story began in 1999 when , MG Creations was contacted by a high school nurse from California’s Central Valley. This nurse was looking for a solution to the daily pile of skateboards in her office. After a year of designing, MG Creations began the production and sales of the “Skateboard Locker.” The idea of a skateboard locker in a structured environment like a school actually makes sense. Especially if you think of it from the standpoint of actually encouraging kids to skate to school instead of punishing them for doing it. These utilities are available over at (wait for it…) Skateboardlockers.com. It’s a fairly simple device, although it seems a little bit under-engineered. By that I mean that there is an awful lot of raw metal being used and wheelbases and width are limited. I’m sure the longboarders at high school are feeling neglected. Skateboard lockers have actually been installed in some California high schools. The devices aren’t being mass produced yet, you have to contact for a quote. According to the web site, the creator Mike Greenwald designs an build skateparks, for whom? It doesn’t say. One slightly amusing tidbit, check out the pictures in the…

…comes around

Mike V is making the nostalgia rounds lately. First he ditched his own company to team up with Powell again, and now he’s going back to Airwalk. I had completely forgotten (more likely failed to register in the the first place) that he ever rode for Airwalk. They’re re-releasing the Enigma. as well as releasing some new versions of old classics reworked by Vallely. You can hear him wax poetic about returning to the Airwalk roster after the jump. I think Airwalk has changed ownership at least twice since he left. [Source: Artist Direct] – Thanks to Tito for the tip.

Carving vs. carving

A German cat named Tobias Megerle has commissioned traditional wood carvers in Mombai, India to make ornamental skateboards instead of furniture for a change, and boy do those sorry guys look miserable. He plans on showing them in an exhibit at a gallery called the Loft at Lower Parel. Megerle said he had been fascinated with the craft but wanted to find a way to showcase it that wasn’t so stuffy and boring. Here’s why he chose skateboards: …the good old skateboard. In Mumbai — though almost completely unknown — the skateboard is, in many places, more than just a piece of sports equipment. It’s an entire lifestyle that’s created around it, a unique music style, special clothes, whole skater-parks. So that’s a heads up to all our, uh… Indian readers. [Source: CNNGO] – Thanks to Eric Cherry for the tip.

eBay Watch: February 2011

February was an interesting month, and not just because of the decks that went off. Don’t get me wrong; there were some great decks going off, but none for the crazy prices that we saw in January. No, February was more a return to normalcy. However, there were some interesting doings outside of eBay. First I got asked to write an article for the Canadian skateboard magazine SBC Skateboard. It’s a short piece specifically for folks who don’t know anything about skateboard collecting, so my loyal readership here probably won’t get anything out of it, but I enjoyed writing it. It was tough keeping it to 700 words though! Just as a reference point, this column is running to over 6000 words these days! I also got asked to write a piece for a Portuguese/English online magazine, and I’m doing that one as we speak. We’re also planning on putting together an eBayWatch Facebook page, so look for that and become a fan if you would! T-shirts and stickers are also in the works, so watch this space. Finally I’d like to thank Nick for his box of goodies. It’s much appreciated, thanks!
