Yeah.. I’m at a loss about this one. Man About Town is a magazine with “Babes, bikes, battleships, booze, burgers, boards & beastly behaviour” but then this video sure is an odd one. I was intrigued with the juxtaposition of stlyes and eras, and ready to give it a thumbs up based purely on the execution of the concept, but the major continuity blunder in going from penny loafers to Vision Street Wear high tops bummed me out. I might have to invent an S&A award just so I can give it to this video. Make no mistake, I love it that people feel a need to make skateboarding videos like this. I wonder if Kilian Martin turned up to the shoot with a European carryall for a skatebag… Has anyone seen this magazine? I mean, I know people have seen it, but I’m asking our readers. There was a tradition of converting old waterskis into skateboards that seems to have fallen by the wayside in this millennium, but someone over at Deep is keeping it alive. This was just a personal project, these guys also make those artisan longboards. the web site is a little maddening because there’s no indication of who, what, or where Deep is, outside of some vague manifesto, but hey, I guess that’s art.

This is a recent advert for Stumptown Coffee that appeared in the Portland Mercury. It’s not the first skateboard themed ad they’ve run. I chopped out some negative space in this to make it take up less vertical space here. My apologies to the artist Tim Root.

Arthur Lindsey is curating an exhibit at Artery called Mercury 7 and the New 9 featuring Dave Carnie, Ashley Anson, Russ Pope, Salvador Perdomo, Ray Gordon, Kim Hamblin, Todd Bratrud, Roger Seliner, Chris Johanson, David Petersen, Andy Jenkins, Jason Adams, Chris Corales, Johanna Jackson, Chris Pastras and Sam Coomes. Hmm… noticeably missing… ME! Dang, man, I already had some Mercury 7 skateboard art in the can! That’s hand screened man, none of that heat transfer nonsense! OK, tantrum is over. (ME! ME! ME! ME! Maker Carry Goods makes errr…. goods out of wood, metal, leather and canvas. There’s the usual fare like wallets, European carry-alls (like Grover used to rock) and assorted bags, but then again there are metal hooks, stools and skateboards with leather riser pads. These could be huge in the metal community. I kind of like those riser pads actually, I just don’t want to buy a skateboard to get a set.

Skateboards on the cover of Good magazine. Conahan isn’t a fan of online magazines that use the fake page turning mechanism. I wonder how he feels about online magazines that have “issues.” This might actually be a print magazine, I’m not sure. In any case, I think this issue is about crappy jobs and the current employment environment. I don’t think the skateboards go any further than the cover.

The Benton County Skateboarding Alliance is looking art to show and sell at the forth Annual Art & Music Benefit to raise money to improve the Eric Scott McKinley Skatepark in Corvallis, OR. They’re currently raised about 10% of their 90k goal, so there’s a ways to go. I’m pleased to say that I’m already prepared to send a few things.

Here’s a short but crazy video of a guy with two paint rollers fixed to his board instead of trucks. It comes from the folks at Alis in Denmark with no explanation whatsoever. Whoever this is, he doesn’t seem to have a problem ripping on a wackyboard.
