Laugh Comics Volume 2, #6 was published in 1988. There’s no skateeboaridn on the cover, unless you count the teaser: “The mighty Archie Art Players star in the suspense thriller ‘Skateboard Scandal’.” And what is that scandal? Someone is sabotaging all the skateboards in Britain in a James Bond parody starring Archie as James Bland and Betty as Miss Henny Penny. Veronica is the Bond-girl (Bland Girl) Lord Cedric’s daughter Pamela. There’s also an ad for Archie posters (he’s on a skateboard in one of them) and an Olympic Sales Club ad where you can earn a Variflex skateboard.
Here’s the cover.
Let’s take a look at the cover. For a comic book titled “Laugh,” the two guys don’t look like they are having much fun. Turns out these are the bad guys, Reggie as “Skull” and Moose as “Iron Arm.”
Skateboard Scandal story. Skull has taken over Lord Cedric’s skateboard factory in order to ruin the country’s youth with malfunctioning skateboards. James Bland goes undercover as a teenager to solve the mystery. Instead of a tricked out car, he’s given a skateboard that can fly (of course) and has a few other enhancements, including the ability to magnetize objects and shoot spitballs. James manages to capture the gang and as he tries to leave with Pamela, Miss Henny Penny sprites him away for the next mission.

They only spent 6 pages on this. I know it’ s about much to complain about the complexity of an Archie comic book, but they really could have done a lot more with this storyline.
Archie posters. This ad for Archie posters appears in a ton of Archie comics published around this time.
Here’s what the poster looks like. They aren’t hard to find, and look surprisingly detailed considering the quality of Archie artwork in general. Published in 1987 and printed by One Stop Posters in Monterey Park, Ca.

And finally an Olympic Sales Club ad where you can earn a Variflex something or other. This identical ad also appears in a lot of other Archie titles.
Ah yes, the Variflex Breaker. I’ve never seen this one before. Better look it up…
Well duh. I have seen it before, here on Skate and Annoy. Can you believe someone actually bootlegged this board?
