Skate and Annoy: Daily

Cannon Beach Redux

I haven’t been to the Cannon Beach skatepark in don’t know… has it really been 18 years? That’s the when the rebuild opened and the last time I posted about this park. I got out of the habit of going to Cannon Beach and have been going to Pacific City instead, but I finally made it back. After a day of hanging out at the beach we hit up the park and found it to be next to impossible to ride on standard wheels because the surface was so rough and slow. That got me thinking about the old park again…

18 years later and the park is insanely slow and rough. That didn’t stop Jet from riding it well. I guess if you’re going to drive 4+ hours from Redmond you’re going to put in more of an effort. From watching him you wouldn’t think he was having any trouble at all. I missed a lot of action, but that’s par for the course when your camera is an old iPhone.

You can almost see how slow the surface is in these pics. If you want to see it when it was closer to new you’ll have to view the old post. Anyone have a picture of the first version of this skatepark?

That anyone is me! Here’s the old park below. From my recollection, it sat pretty much right where the new one is, although I thought it was closer to the wall where the basketball court was. I have no idea when these were taken. The file date says 1999, but I know that is wrong. It’s probably closer to early 2000’s. The filenames all start with “P000,” and those are zeros not the letter “O” you ridiculous child! Meta data says I was using a Kodak (!!) DC290 Zoom Digital Camera. So there’s that. These images came in at a whopping 1792×1200 pixels!

Surely there are better pictures out there? Why yes, thanks to the Wayback Machine and SkateOregon.com. Here’s the overhead view from on top of the wall where the basketball court is. It makes a lot more sense now. I think there was a short wall opposite these banks. This is a strange design, one of those things that if you came across it in the wild you’d be stoked, but as a bespoke skate spot, it’s a head scratcher.

Since I’m already mining the Wayback Machine, here’s a collage of the other 3 Cannon Beach skatepark shots. First guy is unknown. Guy in the yellow shirt is Taylor Wilson.

I got an email from Sam at Skate Oregon sometime last year. It was good to hear from him again. Now that I think about it, It hasn’t really been 18 years since I’ve been to Cannon Beach, I think it’s probably closer to 8, but maybe 10 years passed before actually skating it again. If you can call the 5 or 10 minutes of effort I put in “skating.”
