Roller Derby!

I’m into it. Saw my first match this weekend at the Rose City Rollers season opener. I wasn’t sure what to expect but I really enjoyed it. I’m still not completely solid on all the rules, but I’ll be back again. Pabst Blue Ribbon is one of league sponsors and they raffled off a Pabst longboard of all things. I was going to snap a phone cam picture of it but I didn’t want all the Burnside locals to croak and then roll over in their graves. Getting back to roller derby… interesting to see the now defunct Rebel Skates still listed as a sponsor. But anyway, go see roller derby!

Growing up in the midwest in the 70’s Roller derby was all the rage. A friend’s daughter is looking to get involved in roller derby so I’ll be hitting the rink more often. I still haven’t made a Rose City Rollers match but I suspect that will be changing real soon.

  2. Roller Derby is a blast. Roller Girls are hot as shit and the sport is a great spectator event. You’ll learn the rules and start to see the subtleties in the action. Do everything you can to make it to the after parties too.

    1. good advice! go to the after parties!

John from Rebel sells the ladies wheels, bearings andeqiptment things for a pretty big discount, and is a VIP season ticket holder. Say what you will about him, but he’s really taken a liking to the derby scene and helped out with lots of the events.

        1. Hi Patrick! I hope that your wife is holding up well… props to her for hanging in there. Those ladies work hard on and off the track.

I ran into Benji at the Above Coping event last month. We should all meet up for a sesh and brew!

  8. here’s a list of the derby names. there’s some good ones.

leave it to the LA and San Diego teams to have trademarked names.

  9. Buy the refs a beer at the afterparty and they’ll answer any rules questions you might have.

  10. Rebel Skates Lives. It’s not a company, it’s a lifestyle, it’s an attitude. Like saying Fuck in front of your mom. Bro.

    1. I had a Billy Idol “Rebel Yell” sleeveless tshirt in 5th grade.
