Mountain Dew: Not for air

The best thing about this 1985 commercial for Mountain Dew is the overlay that says “NOT FOR AIR.” A coincidence, of course, but still funny. That means this was probably digitized from an ad agency reference tape. I don’t recall ever seeing this on TV, but perhaps it did. I see Tony Hawk in there, as well as a Madrid freestyler.. Bob Schmelzer? Who is doingthe sliding and wearing the cowboy hat? I leave it to you to fill in the blanks. I know the first thing I think of when I hear the word “country” is a bunch of good old boys street skating down the gravel roads. Yee haw!

That would be Ray Underhill as the featured skater. Billy Ruff, Don Pollard, Britt Parrott, Tony, Bob, Ray and myself were there. The Dew people had Paul Schmitt set his halfpipe up in a park in San Diego. Somewhere there is footage of us sessioning the ramp. Thankfully Stacy P. got involved so the vert footage they used was good and not a bail sequence that looked cool to the Dew ad agency. I’m the blue blur in the back gound on the downhill sequence. I think that Ray sliding down hill county style – yeeee HAW!

  2. dude i totally remember that commercial and that song! thanks for posting that! i still catch myself singing that once in awhile! i remember i was at my grandparents house and all the uncles were there and they were like wow, loook at those guys, and i remember saying i could do the 360s and they were like yeah whatever.

  3. thanks for posting this. I never saw it, but they used that song in a buncha other comercials. the song helped combat “we built this city”.
