Zoo Bomb Skate race

Zoo Bomb skate race

Late night downhill racing in the dark anyone? Portland is probably nearly as famous in the bike community as it is in the skateboard community. I’m not talking strict BMX, I’m talking anything with a crank and pedals. There is a large core of people out there that consider it a lifestyle in much the same way that many skateboarders do. In my neighborhood there is a weekly bike polo (hockey?) game held in a disused tennis court that is pretty aggro and can often be heard from several blocks away. The Zoo Bomb phenom is usually a bunch of crazy bikers that meet to bomb down a hill near Portland’s zoo, hence the name. They get into trouble sometimes, but the City of Portland has been relatively hands off, all things considered. I’ve heard all manners of motorless transport are welcome. As part of Minibike Winter and one of many events on the same night, the official unofficial entity of Zoo Bomb is holding a skate race on February 15th. They’ve got different classes for wheel size, gravity powered only, and now skateboarding as one of them. In their own words:

Skate the zoobomb hill. Prizes, trophies, glory.

The flyer says 9:00pm, but the actual skateboard class is scheduled for 11:45, which means it will probably be more likely to happen some time after midnight. The event will be held rain or shine, and it’s bring your own light. So there you have it, potentially the gnarliest downhill skateboarding event in Portland, or Oregon for that matter, put on by our brothers and sisters in the bike community. You can get more about the same amount of information from ZooBomb.net. I’ve never ridden that hill, any of our readers care to chip in?

  1. Yessss, thanks for putting that up Kilwag, it’s going to be gnarly! Anyone who wants to see what downhill is all about, find a sharp corner and watch the mayhem! Anything 90 degrees or sharper will guarantee some high speed shredding. Zoobomb is notoriously hard to get coverage of because of minimal lighting, so if there are any pioneers you’ll need night vision or some strong lighting.
