The Challengers Go Sidewalk Surfing

The Challengers Go Sidewalk Surfing

I saw this album cover over at the exotic blog of Kahuna Kawentzmann. According to Hodad Heaven, it’s a re-issue that dates back to the 80’s. The original release was credited to the Good Guys. The Good Guys release has a different track listing from the Challengers. You can download MP3’s for a price from Amazon, or free from other places… (Hodad, Ahem.) For some reason the 80’s rerelease is collectable, New copies ago from $49 – $112, and remember this is a CD rerelease! The original LP was up as a vinyl rip for a time, but it’s been archived. You can pick up a copy of the Good Guys version on vinyl via eBay. Right now there is one listed at $25. Check out the cover! You gotta love the original Roller Derby board used as an exclamation point. The back has what may be the first ever monkey on a skateboard too.

Now that I think about this, the so-callee re-release is nothing of the sort. I don’t think there is a single identical track on both albums. They’ve even got a track called “Roller Derby” on the original one, plus one called “Sidewalk Surfer.” The rerelease version has one called “Bust Your Buns” which was a phrase associated with skateboard slams. It also has “Asphalt Spy.” Somewhere, someone on the internet doesn’t have their facts straight. I know it’s hard to believe.

It’s good vintage surf music, though a bit heavy on the saxophone for most of the genre. The Challengers are hailed as being the breakout instrumental surf music band. Mr Moto!

The Challengers Go Sidewalk Surfing. 1965 recordings, Re Released some time in the 80’s and then again in 1996.

  • I just saw this in a record shop up here, and had to buy it. Not only is it rad anyways, but the name of my one man skate gang is The Challengers (based off a old CBC kids movie, and another story). The record is awesome. Two-tone-translucent red and opaque yellow vinyl too.

  • “New surfing gimmick for kids”
