Spermbirds – my god rides a skateboard
If you would ask me, what is the best-known song out of Germany with a connection to skateboarding, I´d say “My god rides a skateboard” by the hardcore/punk band Spermbirds from Kaiserslautern.
There were a couple of other well-known songs like “Skateboard Uh-ah-ah” by 70s pop-rocker Benny or “Skateboarding is not a crime” and “Skate tonight” by Berlin´s skatepunk band Disaster Area [sic] or “Concrete criminals” by Ingolstadt´s Nikoteens, but I guess “My god rides a skateboard” got a bit more recognition worldwide.
The song was released in 1985 on X-Mist Records for the first time on the Spermbirds / Walter Elf 7”. Spermbirds recorded two more songs “Shit rolls downhill” and “She´s got V.D.” for this record. Walter Elf, something like a brother band of the Spermbirds with a pretty similar line-up had two fun-punk tracks on the flipside.
The split-7” had two different cover variations. In late 2012 Rookie records re-released the 7” again. The cover artwork is based (at least a bit) on the second edition with the skateboarder.
Limited to 500 copies.
Thanks to Rookie Records for the scans of the 1st and the 2nd edition.
Their ‘Something to Prove’ record is pretty killer too
Shirley Someone skates better.
S.S. created god.
Their name puts me in mind of something I did when I was fourteen and had chickenpox. In a conscious parody of prejudice, I decided that butterflies were “faggotbirds” and needed to be destroyed, so I crawled around the yard with a can of WD40 and a lighter, trying to incinerate them from a distance. I don’t think I quite got any, though. Damn faggotbirds….
LOVE these dudes!
Nice C-Kadett.
