Planespotting
There’s hundreds of pools visible from planes flying in and out of Midway and O’Hare International Airports in Chicago, problem is, 98% of them are above ground pools, as seen in the shot above that I happend to find on Google Maps. I suppose it’s inevitable with an airport as busy as O’Hare that the satellite would catch a plane coming in for a landing. Flying home (I can’t find the lyrics to the Vibrators song online) to Portland I took some aerial shots from the plane.
Check out this shot of a few blocks near Midway Airport in Chicago, again courtesy of Google Maps. There’s something like 16 pools visible, but they’re all the above ground type, a metal frame with a waterproof lining. Those are much cheaper to build than concrete, and as long as you drain them, you don’t have to worry about them in the winter. This satellite shot must have been taken in the Fall or late Winter because the pools are not filled.
It can be fun to look at pools on Google Maps, but it’s also fun to try and photograph them yourself from the air. The Portland area has quite a few pools surprisingly. These shots were all taken out the window of the plane I was on. Hey kid, get out of the window, I’m trying to take pictures… These didn’t turn out so well, there was some glare from the inside lights as well as condensation and smears on the window.
You’re blowing out all the good swimmin’ holes dammit!
