Maloof strikes back
Maloof just unveiled the plans for the street course at the NYC leg of the Maloof Money Cup on June 5-6, 2010. The big news? The REALLY big news? The “course” is a permanent facility that will be donated to the city Instead of building a temporary course and dismantling it like they did last time. BRAVO!!!!! Lets hope the X-Games and the rest of the would-be contenders fall in step behind these plans if they know what’s good for them, the skateboarding public and the ecology. Details of the as yet unbuilt skate spot that replicates some NYC hot spots after jump.

Construction of the 16,000-square-foot skate park (being constructed on top of the former Astral Fountain in Flushing Meadows Corona Park) gets underway this month, signaling that the countdown to the first-ever Maloof Money Cup New York has officially begun. Pro skaters Chris Cole and Geoff Rowley, NY skate legend Steve Rodriguez and Joe Ciaglia, president of California Skateparks, led the design of the world-class street course.
The Maloof Money Cup New York street course was inspired by real skate spots from each of the five boroughs, said Rodriguez. Weve replicated and improved spots like the Ziegfeld ledge, Con Ed Banks and the Brooklyn Banks 9-stair rail. It will no doubt be exciting to watch the MMC pros break in the course that will become the local spot for many NY skaters for years to come.
The 16,000-sqare-foot course was inspired by NY street spots within the five boroughs, such as:

Union Square rail/steps
Police Plaza 7-stair rail/various stairs
Ziegfeld ledge
Chrystie Park ledge
Exchange Place street gap
JFK Banks
Con Ed Banks

Various rails in public parks and the aesthetics of many of the spots in BrooklynWe at Parks are thrilled to have this unbelievable facility. The Maloof Money Cup at Flushing Meadows Corona Park this June is a first for New York City and our Adopt-a-Park program, said Parks & Recreation Commissioner Adrian Benepe. Flushing Meadows Corona Park currently offers tennis, soccer, swimming, ice skating, cricket, baseball and more. On top of that, it’s already the home of world-class sports facilities like the Billy Jean King National Tennis Center, and Citi Field. Making world-class skateboarding part of it all is tremendous.

seems… one directional.
bravo! they can bring their league sports to my neck of the woods. I’d even pay to watch Chris Cole and Sheckler duel it out. hell I’d buy a $12. can of Coors and a $30. t-shirt, if the public gets the “course”. so far the League of superhero skaters has saved the day. they turned my frown about contests into a smile.

That is of course, if you’re into street skating. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that.)
One directional – I think your average street skater prefers their skateparks that way. It’s a different type of riding. You are focused on one line, and don’t want to worry about cross traffic. It’s a more linear approach. It’s all about hitting an obstacle and not about how you link them together.
At least that’s what I’ve gleamed from my observances in the field. I haven’t successfully radio tagged any park domesticated street skaters.
Why build this it all ready exists all over the city. Part of the fun of street skating is riding from spot to spot. Hello.
That would be a good little video skit – Capturing and radio tagging skaters and releasing them back into the wild to study their habits.
A lot of “street” skaters probably don’t mind their parks one directional. But the GOOD ones could use some flow. Most will hit one spot over and over, but I’ve seen a couple of kids that can keep it going at high speed through an entire park without ever slowing down. Don’t know about filming a contest though. Full on chaos can be hard to track. I’ll take the park in my town though. I’m plenty one dimentional.
The whole thing should be on a motorized turntable.

Maybe add a dimension;transfer to another continent.Buid the Barcelona steps?
And “one-directional”…..I think sane means in the drawing it pretty much only goes downhill.
Way to give back. It’s the right thing to do! Hope the sponsors figure out that there is no better way to endear their companies to skaters.

i think i’d be going around in circles. looks like a 1 hit blunder.but i dont ride street so much so , what do i know. any rail riders out there
the stairs are really nice for walking up. for me the park would have “flow” in this way. also I enjoy being a pedestrian at times. I feel kids these days might not know how to skate in the real world if they never deal with pedestrians. it’s one thing to blunt slide with your filmer and photographer on the steps, but it’s a whole other game when pedestrians who are not in tune with skating are around. as a pedestrian, my objection to this park is that it should have a gap in the back rail and some stairs going down so I could walk through the plaza and keep moving forward with the flow. as a skater I would rather there was some sort of snake run coming off that gap in the rail, but I won’t debate that here cos a free park is a free park.
hopefully this won’t be an excuse not to build like 10 parks in NYC. what a loser city for not already having a few public skateparks!
no worries everyone if you aint feelin the course, they are gonna rebuild it every year so every year nyc has a fresh course hahaha no joke.
i personally think that every year they should go to different boros
