   I love it when you ask a kid where his helmet is and he points to it over at a bench or table. I wish I had a magical helmet that works from 15ft away….On the other hand, natural selection comes in many guises.

   Seriously guys, it’s great you choose to wear helmets. It’s a personal choice, and I’m glad this is not California where you can get a ticket at a skate park for not wearing wrist guards (It Happened). I am sure you all have ridden without helmets at some point. I choose to wear one when i am unfamiliar with the terrain, so I guess I cut down on the risk a little bit. So… don’t be ” THAT GUY” trying to throw a guilt trip on someone who isn’t wearing a helmet. It doesn’t work. K.C., the handstandman fan.

   Wait a minute are people looking to the comic strip for life advice? I’ll need to adopt a more serious tone. How about this? Don’t snake, clean up your trash at the skatepark and wash your pads.

   Helmets suck. They are sweaty, stinky, uncomfortable, and you like a geek.

   Hoiwever, brain damage sucks more…

    I’d rather look like a dork and wear a helmet than wearing a diaper after a bad head injury. And it happens when you least expect it…I speak from experience.

    Most of the kids that where a helmet cuz they “have” to doesn’t do them any good anyway since they are too cool to strap it. Then again, we don’t wear helmets walking down the street and we are just about as likely to get a head injury.

    Let’s face it… skateboarders are death-wish kids, many of whom are really concerned about being gnarly.

    It drives me nuts when I see somebody forcing helmet rhetoric on skatepark people, or chastising smokers, selling Jesus door to door, etc. They are trying to convert people who are often informed.

    Think motorcycle/seatbelt/smoking laws. If you smoke, or don’t wear a helmet or seatbelt, you are more likely to die. Everybody knows it, including the helmet-less unbelted smokers.

    I broke my face on a hill in Alaska (five plates in my sinuses). I wear a helmet now, and I usually wear knee pads on transition because I kneeslide out.

    However, I am not gonna bum some kids session, and make myself look like a bigger dork by soliciting my preference on others.

    CIVIL LIBERTY! KEEP YOUR LAWS OFF MY BODY!

    generally I agree, but the smoking is an entirely different issue. If you want to smoke fine, but don’t do it where I am forced to breath your poison… CIVIL LIBERTY! KEEP YOUR POISON OUT OF MY BODY!

    I love the controversy! I wasn’t referring to the comic strip, but it did get me thinking. I have been asked” Where’s Your Helmet” 2 times in my 41 years. They both happened in the last year, once at the skate park, and once while riding my bike on the path on the water front. It kind of pissed me off because they really didn’t seem to be too concerned about my well being. It was more like they were saying, “I feel insecure about wearing my helmet, and by you not wearing a helmet, it makes me feel uncool.” Rodney Mullens Dad used to make him wear pads and a helmet for Freestyle (Flatland) skating. It was pretty funny seeing him all padded up for that, and he got teased, but people shut up once they saw him skate. Don’t tell his dad, but the last time i saw him skating, he wasn’t wearing any safety gear. As for diapers. With all the crappy food we are eating these days, it’s only a matter of time before we’re all wearing them again. K.C.

    after waking up in Lincoln City’s ER back in spring of 2000,I decided a helmet is a better alternative.

    is this discussion still going on? to add a confusion to the theme i have to add that even MC himself skates without helmet at burnside and some pools. whats that about? comic strip that, mark!!!

    i personally go helmetless so i can look cool and dandy. and i am also very superstitious so if you you tell me to put a helmet on you might ruin my whole day.

    when some lady once told me to wear a helmet because tony hawk wears one, “he’s been skating longer than tony hawk” was the reply in my defense. right after that i slammed and jacked my wrist

    …anyone ever blacked out and lost their vision for 4 hours? I have. Sweaty, stinky, 30c + temperature, whatever, the brain bucket goes on.

    I blacked out for 3 hours and had my vision return while in the ER at LC

    I bring my helmet to battle ground everytime i go, where else could I leave my quart of schlitz unattended?

    @nweyek8 after a skating concussion i blacked out for over 30 mins and had double vision for ~3 months. slept for about 18 hours a day and my left side was ‘floppy’ for about a week. i still feel like i got a novocaine shot in my cheek. and in the fingers of my left hand.

    this was last october.

    and i was wearing a helmet. and i still do.
