Skatepark art, good, bad and ugly.

Skatepark art

A lot public buildings or parks projects contain some small portion the overall budget to be used for art on the site. I was looking at a picture of the cheesy sculpture outside of the Tigard skatepark when I realized in my travels I’ve seen a lot of bad skatepark art projects and a few good ones, including one you can actually skate. So I’m going to put together a gallery of skatepark art, which will, unfortunately contain mostly crap. Send in your pics (large versions please) and I’ll include them. Top left, kent Washington invert sculpture with MC in the foreground. Photo by Dan Hughes. Top right, the lovely squiggle art at Tigard Oregon. Larger after the jump.

dont forget those big pieces of steel shit at Kent II. Rumor has it they cost more than the park itself.

“Skateable art” might be more fun. Just a thought.

  9. Kilwag Says:

    Yeah, let’s do both.

there is a law on the books in many states that requires public places to display art (you ever been to a post office that has a big ol sculpture in the middle or something?) these cheesy things mighta help get the parks built, don’t crack on em too hard.

I think you’ve got it backwards, the art exists because of the skateparks. I’m not anti-art, or even anti-bad art, in fact, I want to give the bad art a wider audience by showing it to everyone! Bad art for everyone!

Renton has these little waterfall things you can skate on. it is kind of fun - in a retarded way. Protip: ride backwards for maximum effect

Why don’t you figure out some skatable art? It would take a skater to know it, an artist to show it!!
