Note: The images here are from retouched scans of the original pasteups used to photocopy the zine. Mark offers a perfect-bound compendium of reformatted Bodyslam reprints, or you can download high quality scans of the original here. Original handwritten version of “Skate Story” has been replaced by a typeset version that doesn’t read well at this scale, your best bet is to see the download link and download the pdf or read the standalone version.
Holy cow! Homemade perfect bound zine, glued edges and a duct-tape spine. According to Mark, the print run was maybe 25.
Features: Marcus’s ramp contest (Rose City Races), Bugland, letters (including 2 more barley legible ones from Stacy Peralta on Powell Peralta letterhead), photos, Non-vert madness, Skate Story by Patrick Blane, TV news coverage of high air contest at Marcus’ ramp. (Unfortunately the VHS tape has been lost in time) Oddly enough, the contest was held by the Cascade Racing Association. Interview with the (fictional) Skategod.
Skaters: Ryan Neuhoff, Eric Dressen, Craig Conahan, Dave Thornton, Larry Desannos, Christian Hosoi, Bill Reese, Craig, Mark Shaugnessey, Paul Birnbaum, Tom Huckabee, Chester, Billy, Ryan, Harris Rankin, Mark Healy, Bill Reese
Spots: Superbowl, Olympia skatepark, Marcus’ ramp in Aloha Oregon, Skate City, Tac’s ramp in eastern Washington, Hostage pool, Beverly ramp in Massachusetts, John Capra’s ramp in Hamilton Mass, Bugland AKA Ryan’s ramp,
Honorable Mentions: Thanks to John Hartung and Steve Coutcher, “Skateboarding is not an art. It’s a disease.” Jay “Smay” Williamson was captioned as “Jay Mugging” in a previous issue where “Mugging” was meant as a verb, but it stuck as a nickname for him.
Here’s a picture of the screen printed cover.
