Featured Skateboard: Roller Derby
Montgomery Ward Christmas Book from 1964, page 290. 1964 is the earliest we’ve seen any skateboards in department store catalogs, going back to 1959. Granted, we haven’t definitively seen every catalog there is. In 1964 they weren’t ready to classify skateboarding as a legitimate outdoor activity, and as a result, the skateboard is sandwiched between the bouncy toy, clip-on roller skates (real roller skates have their own page) and archery gear.

Roller Derby
Here’s an example of the Roller Derby skateboard. It was sometimes printed with the graphic facing the opposite direction. This board was also produced with “#10 Skatebaord” on the top, again with the graphic facing both ways.
