Featured Skateboard: Roller Derby
1964 JCPenney Christmas Book page 230. 1964 is the earliest we’ve seen any skateboards in department store catalogs, going back to 1959. Granted, we haven’t definitively seen every catalog there is. In 1964 they weren’t ready to classify skateboarding as a legitimate outdoor activity, and as a result, the skateboard is sandwiched between the bouncy toys and punching bags.

Roller Derby
Here’s an example of the Roller Derby skateboard. It was sometimes printed with the graphic facing the opposite direction. This board was also produced with “#10 Skatebaord” on the top, again with the graphic facing both ways.
