Corvallis Oregon Pool
Corvallis Oregon Pool: Posted 11-15-06: By Kilwag This article was originally static HTML. Original comments can be found here. This tiny pool along side a busy street was up and running for just about forever and a day. There were rumors of $200 tickets being given out but that was likely just subterfuge as nobody seemed to actually know anyone personally who had gotten a ticket. The pool was in a motel that was being torn down. Seems like that was going around this summer. One interesting feature about this pool was the fake jewels embedded in the surface. It looked like it would have been really sticky but it wasn’t, not that I hit much coping. By the time I got there there were already a few pieces of coping missing, and I heard they went pretty fast. It was pretty tight, especially in the deep end. The BMX contingent was hitting it hard. I was surprised they were able to ride it because it seemed like there was barely room enough for them to turn around within the radius of the deep end, but they could. They even managed to roll into the shallow by carving the tranny…
Middle Age Shred Northern Mafia Jam 2006
Middle Age Shred Northern Mafia Jam, Leeds Works Skatepark, Saturday 28th October 2006: Posted 11-03-06: By Mattew Sefton It hung in the balance for a while – with tales of a simple private venue hire by middle-age-shred.com ‘Godfather’ Carl Arnfield for one of the regular gatherings of the UK’s more, ahem, ‘mature’ skaters being taken over by a BBC film crew and, even worse, PEOPLE UNDER 30!, the Middle-Age-Shred.com ‘Northern Mafia’ Jam at Leeds Works indoor park looked like it would be wiped from the calendar. It wasn’t. It rocked. Hard!
Newcastle England Skate Scene
Newcastle England Skate Scene – United Kingdom – By Matthew Sefton- Posted 9-12-06 This article was originally static html. Original comments can be found here. We’ve always had ties to the U.K. at Skate and Annoy, seeing as how Neil (the guy who originally said “let’s make a skate zine.”) was a transplant from Liverpool. In early print issues we had a U.K. scene report. Now we are stoked to post this comprehensive UK scene report on the Newcastle England area by reader Matthew Sefton, who is well on his way to being our official U.K. correspondent. Wait a second, correspondents usually get paid right? Better make him an intern instead. We hope you enjoy this. Read And Destroy! Don’t forget to show your appreciation for his exhaustive reporting in the comments section. Someone tell me what “Toodle Pip” means. – K.ed.
2006 Oregon Trifecta: Newberg
This was an old static HTML article that has been restored here. Original comments can be found here. Oregon Trifecta 2006 – Newberg – See also Lincoln City – West Linn Weary. Weary. Weary. Just as I almost couldn’t drag myself to the third day of the Trifecta, I’ve had an even harder time finishing the third day’s coverage. To top it all off, I took a bunch of crappy photos. To make up for it, I’ve emphasized quantity over quality. and I’ve gone outside my one ones and zeros to enlist the help of local photog Brock, who takes a mean picture. His stuff is at the end, so skip to it if you want. The third day of the Trifecta always seems like the longest. Newberg never fails to line up what seems like an enormous pool of kids for the locals part of the contest. It’s always hot too. It’s not exactly the best place for a contest because it is just too spread out. It takes a skater longer to get from one obstacle to the other as a result. It’s a blast to skate, and can accommodate more skaters thatn your typical Northwest park, but…
2006 Oregon Trifecta: West Linn
This was an old static HTML article that has been restored here. Original comments can be found here. Oregon Trifecta 2006 – West Linn – See also Lincoln City – Newberg Day two of the Trifecta. This is where it all started to fall apart last year. But again everything ran pretty smoothly, or at least as smooth as any contest of this caliber. Today I made it in time for every event, including every excruciating open practice session. Three days in a row of this circus has got to be mind numbing for the judges and officials. My hat is off to them for being able to maintain the interest level and motivation to keep it going.
2006 Oregon Trifecta: Lincoln City
This article was originally static HTML. Original comments can be found here. Oregon Trifecta 2006 – Lincoln City – See also West Linn – Newberg 2006 marks the third year of the Oregon Trifecta. The first year nobody knew what to expect and everyone got blown away by the “shock and awe” bombardment level of skateboarding that went down, particularly at West Linn. The second year everyone was expecting the best. There certainly was some incredible skating, but there was also a lot of drama and confusion and generally sloppy execution on the part of the staff that was kind of a buzz kill. This year things got back on track for the most part. There were a few surprises, but for the most part this was just another skateboard contest with some solid competition. Those expecting drama and a major reason to bitch were mostly without cause to complain. World Cup Skateboarding, and Omega Entertainment pulled off this year’s Trifecta with nary a hitch that went beyond the normal drudgery of your typical skateboard contest. If you want to skip to the results you can find them here. Thanks to Don Bostick at World Cup Sakteboarding for that, and…
Pier Park Construction – Part 3
More progress. Looks like the full pipe has been extended and a little bit more of the mid sized bowl. Be prepared for more pictures of full pipe construction than you’ll ever find necessary. Thanks again to Mark Conahan. Check out his posts and pictures on Pier Park here. Other related features include construction series five, four, two, demolition, and the demolition session pics.
St. Johns Construction Starts!
Exciting times for Portlanders…. How’s it coming? When the hell will it be done? According to sources at Skaters For Portland Skateparks, Dreamland has had to deal with mountains of red tape and other bureaucratic delays that have ballooned the original time and cost estimates. It seems like the whole thing could have been done easier and quicker without the Park District and City of Portland’s involvement. Well, except for the whole “not quite having enough money” factor. The problem is, once Public money became involved, it automatically raised costs due to certain procedures that had to be followed.
Idaho Road Trip
Idaho Road Trip 2006 – By Kilwag Every year Shawn organizes a road trip for an extended weekend to skate some place we don’t usually make it out to. It’s a good thing he does because otherwise we’d never get all the logistics together. Shawn lives in his own private hell, Ask him about his commute. He usually ends up taking almost a whole week off. This year he traded private hell for private Idaho. (Hey-oh!) My drive time and work schedule dictated that I only take 3 days off, so I hopped on a plane to Boise after cutting out early from work on Thursday afternoon. One way tickets from Portland to Boise can be bought for as little as $50 if you time it right. A short hour later (versus seven plus hours to drive) I arrived in Boise Idaho. The first thing I did was look for tourist crap. I asked the girl behind the counter if she thought how accurately the “Spuds” magnet portrayed her great state. The only answer I got was a derisive snort. Buhl Buhl was a short drive down the highway, and home to a relatively new park built by Dreamland. I…
Sleestock 2006
Sometimes when a group of skateboard nerds get together on the Interweb they need to share their warm fuzzy feelings, so they get together for an unconventional convention of sorts. This one was called Sleestock ’06, named after the infamous web community where lots of people waste time while they should be working – Sleestak. It’s on a need to know basis. Some say it’s elitist, but really, how can anyone this goofy think they are better than anyone else? If you can help out with the names I missed please do. Alcohol and other distractions conspired against my photography skills, so the results aren’t that great. Good thing straight edge isn’t a set of rules, cause this street session on the gravel was partially inspired by bottled courage, or in this case, perhaps bottled stupidity. It’s hard to believe these guys were actually skating on gravel. The wheels didn’t spin a lot, they mostly seemed to slide. Amazingly, no flat spots occurred. It’s the middle of the day (Saturday) and not a lot of people are riding. It’s not clear what the ratio of Sleestaker’s to park users was, but it was clear that some people enjoying Lincoln City…
