Skate and Annoy: Features

2009 Oregon Trifecta – Tigard

Warning! This 2009 post is from our static HTML era when updates were infrequent, and a pain in the ass.  It has been ported over for the sake of… what? I’m not sure. Nostalgia? Justifications are as slim as the images are small here. The content may be embarrassing, naive, poorly checked for grammar and spelling, or just plain bad, but here it is.  Our audience was mostly regional, mostly friends and friends of friends. In late 2006 we started integrating Wordpress into the site, but the so-called “features” mostly remained offline until 2016! Some of them never made it, but  this one did. Enjoy!

I recall being “over it” at the time, almost as much as the promoters – at least during their organization phase, everyone was stoked the day of the event. I was so over it that it took me 4 months to post the Pier Park day. This was the last year I believe. Unless of course I blew the whole thing off the next year. I think I have vague memory of not going at some point. What an ignominious end to this beloved series, and certainly my rigorous coverage of the event. – Kilwag

It was a day like any other day. There was a skateboard contest. There was ripping involved. People showed up from out of town to rage. Having the event webcast live was detrimental to my motivation to get out there and shoot. I’m kind of late. I should get going. Oh I see on the computer that I’m not missing anything yet…. But then there was the car fire on the highway that resulted in a sizeable unforeseen delay. Where are the live webcasts of traffic conditions en route to skateparks?

This year it was overcast and very cool, the complete opposite of the scorching conditions present last year, which is irrelevant, but was a hot topic. Tigard seemed to get off to a slow start, perhaps that was due to the general uncertainty, nay, general malaise caused by the cancellation of the Lincoln City opener. However, by the time the finals came around everyone was appropriately amped. I have to cop to being secretly pleased with fact that there were only two days of contests. I love Lincoln City, but I’m glad I didn’t have to go there to take pictures. I’d rather skate if I have to put in the drive time to get out there and back. Usually by the last day I’m a little shell-shocked, I can’t imagine how it is for, you know, the skaters in the contest!

Well with the one event cancelled, that means they extra prize money to split for the next two days’s events Right? RIGHT???? I guess not. First place in the main even got a whopping $300. Are you kidding? What a rinky dink operation. Obviously, the event spent much more than that on expenses, but seriously. It’s especially embarrassing considering all the hype. Just when the event seemed like it was getting back on track… One step forward. Two steps back. The good news is, the rippers didn’t seem to care. One thing that was nice this year, mysterious qualifying events in the previous days eliminated the need for countless heats of sub par eleminations.

No major injuries this year, which was really nice. Well, Demarkas James broke his ankle, but that might have been just to get away from his obnoxious “coach,” “friend” or whoever that guy was. Best impression of the wosrt little league dad ever. There was a scare where little Steve Pineiro caught someone’s board to his ribs while he was laying on the ground, but he ended up ok. Steve Reeves was taking some brutal slams, but kept going at it.

This year it seemed like the Trifecta, excuse me, Bifecta was overrun by Texans and prepubescent rippers. Not to mention a guy named Jeff Mattson who came out of nowhere (err, uh, California, actually) who was charging around Tigard like he owned the place. He ended up in third place behind Mason Huggins and wunderkind Kevin Kowalski, who was fresh off a recent X-Games superpark semifinals appearance and a previous week’s third place finish in the Converse Costal Carnage event. Let’s put it in perspective, 15th place at the Costal Carnage still made more money than Kevin’s first place finish at the Trifecta. How is Colin supposed to pay for his limo?

Master’s results: Buck Smith – Lance Mountain – Mark Partain. Buck won at Tigard last year too. Ladies: Julie Kindstrand – Nora Vasconcellos – Priscilla Lee. Julie won everything last year too. I missed the ladies event, by the way. Official results are up on the World Cup site. Enjoy the lame pictures. I need to get reacquainted with my camera.
