John Aguilar sends us pictures of Mexico all the time. I’ve been trying to get him to write a feature for a while now, but he’s a busy guy. So far all I have out of him is a paragraph and a some captions. Rather than sit on this forever, I thought we should post what we have. John’s been skating through two skateboard booms, and he’s not stopping anytime soon. The first bunch of pictures are mainly from the 80’s. Towards the end it’s all the Mexico City park. John sometimes hosts the Old School Jam in Mexico City, which is worth a feature itself. I think Thrasher might have actually covered it once, I can’t remember. Hopefully I’ll make it down there once. Until then, take it away John…
Skateboarding in Mexico! By John Aguilar.
Skateboarding in Mexico has been around for quite a time now, back in the late 70´s beginning of the 80´s there were several skate parks , like “el gran batazo” which had a snake run and the funny thing is that it had those baseball hitting cages. Arround it which was mainly the reason of the name of the place, then there was Skatorama up in the north of the city , that’s were it all mainly started you could see guys like Cesar Delgado(jay), Cala Bazo, Frijol , el Sombra, Mincho, Cacha, amongst those local you could see the Godoys also taking some runs in Skatorama, So many to name… During the boom in the eighties till the 90´s skating in the city started to grow,, skateparks closed and new ones opened up like Heart Beat club…. ja!! That name sucked. And Skate Inn, Skate Inn opened up around 1990 and closed in 93. It got skated by Chris Miller, Hawk, Lasek, Mark Roach, Chris Livingston, just to name a few. And also passed by there were the Sierra brothers (Ivory & Shelter), Buddy Nichols and gang (Rawlings, Taylor, Mouse)… amongst others. Those were good times, then suddenly the down fall!!! Small wheels and all that baggy shit!! But we keep on skating, no matter what. Nowadays, besides all the fashion crap, Mexico skateboarding is strong, and skate parks are popping up in different states.

The caption for this picture was to long to include as a popup.

it had these transitions banks it was cool!! this from like 88 or 89 more
or less the place was closed and we used to jump the fence. The care taker
there used to have goats and sheeps and he had these male sheep and
sometimes theyd try to ram you down. It was fun. Behind on the right hand
side you can see part of the u half pipe, no flat , no platform and like
with 4 feet of vert. That place was fun. Now it has a condo unit housing
crap on top of it!!
