Local Chaos
A while back I was periodically updating the archive of periodicals, aka the 80’s Skate Zine Gallery. I’ve been lagging and sorely sagging. meanwhile, there’s Local Chaos out of Ann Arbor, Michigan whose print issues span 1984 to the present day, with a short period of abstinence. LC has more zines scanned in their archives (from all over) than I probably have in my whole collection. Time to get back on the horse.
Bleeding in the Midwest
Lifeblood Skateboards premier for the video We Must Bleed is this Saturday, November 5th at Commonwealth in Portland, at 8:PM (Demo / free skate for an hour before. No word on couples skating.) In the mean time check out three video episodes of the recent Lifeblood tour of the Midwest after the jump.
Barge at will
Red Bull is sponsoring… well, it’s a skatepark built on a barge, floating down the Mississippi river. There are events planned – for days already passed, sorry guys, but there’s still one to go October 8th and 9th. Sunday’s contest has top place finishers from earlier events in Saint Paul, the Quad Cities and St Louis. Meanwhile they have a crew on board and on board while in transit. I’m glad I live in a world where someone thinks something like this is worth paying for. Floating street course by Spohn Ranch, web site for the Mississippi Grind by Red Bull. Video on how it went down after the jump.
FU old man!
If you learned to rotate 90 degrees a year it would only take you eight years to master a 720, which works out fine for eight year old Evan Doherty. The video description says he landed the 720 on “vert” but he’s clearly way down by the seam on the transition. I’m clearly just kidding… This puts things like thefirst “street” backflip into perspective. This eight year old probably lives in Calif… what’s that? Oh yeah? Kansas… I wonder how long he’ll stick with it. Video after the jump.
Sideways Sponsor Luv
Midwest tour from Lifeblood Skateboards. These guys are rulers. Check it out, let them crash on your couch. The per diem is pretty slim. Technically not a sponsor of the site, but have I mentioned how much I like Johnny Turgesen? And Midwest uber alles.
Best of Skate Fate
Holy Cow (skates) It’s the legendary GSD and his seminal zine Skate Fate. I’ll bet he hates being called legendary.GSD is celebrating the 30 (!) year anniversary of Skate Fate by releasing a 320 page best of volume, which you can pick up for a reasonable price at Blurb, except the shipping (fixed pirce from Blurb) is pretty steep. Anyone want to go in on a joint order? Press release and sample pages after the jump.
Kansas City police and media stumped, obviously not radical
In this amusing video you can hear the newscasters baffled, scratching their heads trying to figure out why anyone would bother to steal all the parking blocks from a parking lot. Even the business owner is shocked that the more valuable items in the window were left behind. There really is a glaringly obvious reason… It must be a cult. Turns out parking blocks cost about $25 a pop. Somewhere there’s a DIY spot in the greater Kansas City area that just received a nice donation. Check out “Strange Theft Of Parking Stops Confuses Police, Victim” on KMBC.com. [Source: Yahoo News]- Thanks to Jeff Roenning for the tip.
Midwest Uber Alles
I don’t usually post a lot of random product announcements unless it tickles my fancy. This one I’m featuring purely because I still love the midwest, even though I don’t really want to live there. If you’re a long time reader you’ll also know I’ve got an affinity for all things Surf Ohio/Cow Skates. Assault Skateboards just released a board for Ohioan Mark Heintzman that is more or less a re-issue of his old ketchup bottle graphic for G&S. Assorted Mark Heintzman video and photo paraphernalia after the jump. – Thanks to Jeff Haynes for the tip.
