Another Driveway Spot
Spotted in near NE Portland, this driveway bank looks like it could be glorious, provided you could clean the decades of driveway moss off the surface. Get your soft wheels ready. I love a good driveway spot.
King of the neighborhood!
Chris Cantwell operates a skateshop in Bradenton, Florida, and even though it’s got a really nice skatepark, Chris decided he needed his own concrete. I once built a 6 foot tall miniramp in the front yard of a house I was renting, but Chris’s vision and execution is so much more amazing. The closest thing I can think of is that small front yard skate obstacles set hidden somewhere in Seattle, and this is at least an order of magnitude larger. The Seattle front yard was built for a little kid, nothing over2 feet or so. The owners got some flack from the neighbors but the zoning was OK. I remember seeing it in a video, and I’d swear I posted it here, but it’s getting harder and harder to find old posts on S&A – We’re past 6k posts on the blog part alone. Chris’s project is also legitimate in the eyes of the city where he lives. Check out the pics after the jump. – Thanks to Tito for the tip.
Driveway skate spot
There are a lot of driveways like this in Portland. I snapped this while cruising garage sales this summer. Looks like a fun spot.
Spot check in NE Portland
Spotted on a bike ride over the weekend. Pretty good unintentional driveway spot. Another view after the jump.
SOTW 2-25-13: Grover Compound Hijinks
This week’s Shot of the Week is the always understated, always ripping Tim Eberly enjoying a bit of a dork session at the Grover compound, and riding away from it. The Grover compound (Should I say Kompound?) is a bit like a mini Skatopia… That is if Skatopia had a wife who made sure nobody was going nuts and everything had to be cleaned up at the end of the day, and everyone left the premises so the owners could be in bed by 9:30. Photo by the never understated, sometimes ripping, Steve Grover. Yes, that is 150cc of pure 80’s Japanese hair dryer in the driveway. Eat it, Pete Townshend.

This week’s Shot of the Week is Joscelyn’s dog Dorothy. Photo by Ted Schwallie AKA offtheschwall on Instagram.
Drive by ramp spotting
In this installment of drive by camera phone shots, what looks like the beginnings of a miniramp being constructed in a driveway. Turns out it was for a Nike photo shoot on nearby Sauvie Island. Not a miniramp, but some sort of run up to quarter pipe with a gap. As it was a few blocks from my house and in the front yard on busy street, I had to pull over and ask what was up. The guy building seemed a little weirded out by my enthusiasm. Sure is a lot going on skateboarding wise here in and around Portland. I was just thinking about that while reading Neil’s ebay watch. Two things that came to mind when he mentioned a Mark Partain – He lives in Hood River, and Julien Stranger – He was at MC’s bowl on Saturday. Now that I think about it, Chad Vogt has a model on Portland’s M&M Skateboards too.
Reader Ramps: Driveway = fun
Not exactly reader DIY, but still in the same spirit. I’ve got nothing against plywood, but these days it seems like more and more people are opting for concrete. I mean, it seems that way to me, but maybe that’s because I live in Portland. Ok, not fair, it’s definitely part of a larger trend. Listen, I’ve been churning this stuff out for three years now. Blah, blah, blah. Nothing interesting to say. Check out Jocelyn’s new driveway. I guess she needed to have her driveway redone anyway, so she decided to turn part of it into a miniramp. If you’re jealous, well.. we are entering the raining season.. The pictures start off level and well framed, but as more and more progress its made the horizons start to shift and the composition gets awkward. It’s almost like she was having a hard time containing her excitement. Jocelyn’s last name withheld to prevent excessive doorbell ringing.
Reader DIY: Wood and concrete
Reader Bill Morgan sent in some pics of his DIY project. It started as a quarterpipe painted to look like concrete. It sits in his rather short driveway, but there’s a hell of a lip where the driveway meets street. So what’s a skater to do? How about poring a nice little micro transition to make the approach work without having to ollie it? And while you’re at it, why not put some thin set on the rough patch of street? You’ve go to be in good with your neighbors to get away with that!
Reader DIY in Ohio
Matt in Ohio sent these pics of some driveway alterations he’s been working on. He’s taking a unique approach of pouring the concrete in a mold and then digging out a spot for it on the side of his driveway. He says he’s got several more planned. You can check out his progress here.
