OK. Here we go again. Another site launched trying to target the social networking aspects of MySpace and YouTube directly towards skateboarders. This one goes as far as to have a press release spelling it out. On the surface it makes sense, but the fact that they have a press release in the first place should be a tip off. Smells like teen marketing all right. The title of the press release is “YouTube and Google Video are too Mainstream for Skateboarding Culture” So it’s Mycityskates.com to the rescue right?

Troy Sliter sent in some pics of Pier Park. Some are from opening day. Others, not so much. Rather than integrate them into the already existing feature, I’ll just put them up here. More after the jump.

We’ve edited some footage from an interview we did with Warren a little over a year ago. In the interview he talks about skateboarding and about life and death. We’d like to give back to the skate community like he did for so many years. Here’s a link to a really good video interview of Warren Bolster put together by Pam Rittelmeyer and Mike Papadopoulos. It’s got interesting bits about the industry and a puts a human face on the name behind the classic photographs. He talks a little about his personal difficulties, and you really get a sense of how passionate he was about skateboarding and surfing. It was filmed right before the Concrete Wave collection of his photographs was published. Highly recommended. Thanks to Billy Runaway for the tip.

Meet some modern-day pioneers who turned Oregon into one of the most well-known skatebarding (sic) destinations in the world. – I’m guessing that means Dreamland interviews? Episode 1803 of an Oregon Public Broadcasting show called Oregon Field Guide will be broadcast Thursday October 19, 2006. It repeats at 2:30am and 6:30pm on Sunday. What is skateBARDing? Yeah, I don’t know what the hell that means either, but it’s a direct quote from the November issue of Teen Vogue, which has a crush on skateboarders. They’re so dreamy, you know?

Yes kids, it’s time for another fake installment of Grover’s Video Korner, where we spell quality with a “K” and a smile. This week we’ve got Pier Park opening day video as seen on two TV news channels. Watch Rebel’s Jay Smay completely forget about the existence of Burnside on camera. This link comes to us from Earth Patrol Media’s YouTube Tuesday where we usually poach our videos. Except this time it’s our upload that he poached from us before we linked to it. So we are poaching ourselves recursively, which should allow us to go back in time and purchase a bunch of NOS Natas boards and sell them on eBay for a fortune. Also included is Gar’s video from opening day with decidedly less awkward slang from news anchors. At the end you can see me taking this shot. Too bad I couldn’t focus. The Minutemen. I think the first time I ever heard them was on a Skate Rock compilation. They were always championed by Thrasher. The DVD of the documentary has been out for a while. MC weighs in with a review of the 2 disc DVD, which you can buy from the web site along with some pretty cool looking skateboards that say it all. Check it out.

As I was putting these together I got a report from field agent Wes Cording that he had a fun session there today but it got rained out. Apparently there are several parked cars full of skaters waiting for the rain to stop again. Until then, here are some more pics of the opening day of Pier Park. Does anyone know what happened to the Nike SB team? There are links to more pictures from other sources as well. None of my shots are very good, but that’s OK. Lost in all the hubbub of the opening of the park is the fact that there is a lot of work to do if we want to see the rest of those 19 parks built, or if we want to see a roof and lights over Pier Park. Skaters for Portland Skateparks has been carrying a cross on your behalf for five years now. The opening of the new Pier Park hasn’t stopped them from giving even more as seen in this novelty check symbolizing a very real donation of another $1000 by SPS to Portland Parks.
