Skate and Annoy: Daily
Pool Season at Weiden+Kennedy
Weiden+Kennedy is filming skateboards again. Must be a contact high from all their Nike work. This time it’s all about how it’s (still) pool season in California. Not a lot of actual skateboarding, but it is packed with some nicely framed shots of empty pools. Check out Cannonball.
– Thanks to… I lost the email! Sorry.
Me want skateboard
Cookie Monster in a classic pose. I have no idea what time period this is from. It could be any tie from the mid eighties on.
Friday T&A on S&A?
I don’t know… she looks so bored, possibly confused. I lost the link to this photo, but it was some place in the U.K. (I think) selling N.O.S. t-shirts for exorbitant prices. UPDATE: Dee Dee’s Vintage. Spinnin Wheels. – Thanks Matt.
Back in business
I usually frown on taking care of personal business in public on this web site (I’m looking at you Neil!) but hey, it is my site after all, and I’m excited to be back in the business of screenprinting skateboards.
Mike V: One rad, mad, bad dude with an identity crisis?
Seriously. Joining a semi-pro hockey team and quitting his bread and butter sponsor Element in a few short weeks? His new skateboard company is called By the Sword, No wait, try this one instead. The OC Weekly interviewed him about it. He’s also setting up a skatepark tour where you can buy tickets to hang out with him. I’m sure he’s got another movie or two in the can or in the works. He’s a busy, busy guy who makes some odd decisions. He must be putting the fear of God into his press agent because it seems like I get an email every other day. The image above is a still within a still from the Mike V promo reel. He should have put news footage of his brawl outside the hockey rink. It’s probably not in the best interest of promoting the Mike V franchise, but it would have demonstrated a good sense of humor.
Never the twain shall meet?
Oh you kids and your mash-ups. Check out this vid from Brett Novak, you know, Skateboarding Visual Effects Artist Extraordinaire? The skating on this is a mix of 70’s freestyle, 80’s streetstyle and well, 90’s freestyle meets modern street skating. Heck, there are even some moments to make Dan Gesmer proud. There will be haters, but you can not deny the creativity and skill. And seriously, I was completely joking about yesterday’s freestyle post. I have nothing against Rodney Mullen, at least he’s not lying about it being impossible to make good skateboards in North America. I respect his talents though. I thought it was funny that the two biggest things my son took away from the Bone Brigade Video whenshow were Lance Mountain (his favorite part is where he rides the tricycle) and the Mullen frestyling. He was pretty fascinated, and kept asking “What is he doing?” Kill your idols and watch the new blood, Kilian Martin after the jump. Doubters? How about a Primo slide off a handful of steps?
– Thanks to Eric Cherry for the tip.
It’s not really DIY…
…when you pay someone else to do it for you. Still, it’s got an appeal that leans that way. Look for it nestled in between a bunch of hippies in southeast Portland. Jesse built this. He’s on the crew that built Coos Bay and Gold Beach.
