Surfer Today has an in-depth interview with Gregg Carroll, one of the co-stars of the seminal Oscar nominated skate film Skaterdater, that was released in that golden year of skateboarding, 1965. It’s definitely must-read material if you have any interest in the real roots of skateboarding, and full of fascinating insights into the pro scene at this pioneering time. The forward is written by the former publisher of Concrete Wave magazine, Michael Brooke. The publication date is May of 2022, which was surprising to me, I had assumed this would have been an older article. Gregg is still skating (he was only 12 at the time the movie was made.) Well done on saving this bit of skateboarding history. The fun version of the movie is somehow still available on Youtube.

Just when you thought Tech Deck has had run its course. Shredline 360 is a motorized turntable with swappable obstacles that is 20″ in diameter when fully assembled. It’s a little small and janky looking for the serious fingerboarder, but I can imagine a little kid getting stoked about this and spending a lot of time with it. Yes, I am aware that I used the term “serious fingerboarder” without irony.

“Model of the Month” in the December 2002 (#483) issue of White Dwarf magazine is Tony Ork by Stan Byrne. White Dwarf is a magazine devoted to players of the game Warhammer. A section of the magazine features gaming models and figures created and/or painted by the readers. Not just a casual skateboarder, the Andrecht is called out by name. I’m not a Warhammer player, but I assume “Orc” and “Ork” are interchangeable. This is the first time you’ve seen an Orc or and Ork in jeans…

This is issue #48 of Reggie’s Wise Guy Jokes, published in January of 1979 by the Archie Comics Group. It’s got skateboarding on the cover as well as two single page stories that feature skateboarding, including what just might be the first ever guitar-as-skateboard!

Kinder Em-Eukal makes cough drops and sweets and has a mascot named Felix. The packaging was designed by an agency called Milk Food. So far Felix has been spotted with an orange, blue, and yellow skateboard. Thanks to… I want to say… David Maes for the tip?

It’s Jesus riding a skateboard! These faux ugly Christmas sweaters that are actually sweatshirts are available from about 100 different online merchants. It’s a shame that Jesus isn’t rendered in the blocky fashion to match the rest of the illustration.

Bugs Bunny #213 is from October, 1979. It was published by Western Publishing under the Gold Key and Whitman labels, the former in newsstands and the latter in poly bags for stores. A disapproving Elmer Fudd looks on as Bugs prepares to go into a double-truck carve grind in the pool he must have drained. That wascally rabbit… There are no other skateboard illustrations in this issue except for the one in an Olympic Sales Club ad that features a California Free Former plastic skateboard.

Actress Halle Berry has been hanging out with physical trainer Peter Lee Thomas doing things like getting fit and skateboarding, promoting a “digital health, awareness, and wellness community.” Community is a new word for shop these days. These pics are from her Instagram feed.

Who knows how many times the Airwalk brand name has changed owners since it first appeared on the scene in the late 80s. You may be used to seeing Vision name slapped on crappy scooters and the like, but it’s always amusing when a new blast from the past shows up. Witness the Airwalk brand of inline skates, likely on sale in a Target or Marshalls near you.
