Skate and Annoy: Daily
We’re all friends?
Group show at Powells in Portland. It stays up through the month of June. Opening reception on Thursday June 2nd, 6-9.
Wavves: Post Acid
Wavves are a San Diego that depending on who you read, is either a solo project with hired guns, the new sound, or a bunch of noise. Here’s a good place to start. They released the Post Acid single on Green Label Sound, which is a, uhm.. mp3 record label owned by Pepsi via Mountain Dew. Check out the 2010 vid and a 2009 album on Fat Possum with an old-timey looking skate photo on the cover after the jump. – Thanks to Alex I for the tip.
Glennz designz
He’s Glenn Jones is a graphic designer and illustrator from Auckland, New Zealand who operates under the name GLENNZ, which is derived from ‘GLENN’ and ‘NZ’ concatenated. You can visit his site and vote on which of his designs you’d like to see made into a t-shirt. Currently there are four skateboard illustrations in the mix. I don’t know where they disappear to after voting ends, so I’ve archived them after the jump. – Thanks to Matthijs for the tip
Museum of Ocean and Surf
Given the nature of the birth of our sport, it’s no surprise that a Museum of Ocean and Surf might draw inspiration from forms that inspire skaters as well. Seriously, it’s got to be a coincidence that it actually looks like a half pipe. There’s also allegedly a pool of sorts (see middle righr and bottom) but ironically enough, none of the surface of this structure appears to be actually skateable. I mean, that would have been something. See the Museum of Ocean and Surf in Biarritz, France by Steven Holl Architects in collaboration with Solange Fabião. funny image from my phone cam
Someone want to remind me how the phonecam comes up with a double exposure-type image like this? I think this was the HDR version of a shot of Dan Hughes one-foot carving.
Skateboarding
In which I blather on about skateboarding, popular culture and other stuff, make references to old punk rock songs, inside jokes and pretend to be self deprecating. Mention DIY and other buzzwords, wistful words, appeal to the local fan base, fly the flag and remenisce about back in the day. Enjoy the weekend! – Thanks to everyone for the tip.
Protec Pool Party
Dan Bourqui put up a gallery of shots from last weekend’s Vans Protec Pool Party, check them out at 50-50.com. I watched about a half hour of it on Saturday, the whole thing kind of snuck up on me. I didn’t realize it was happening until Grover called me asking what time it started. The biggest noteworthy event has to be Tony Hawks return to competition. He placed 4th in the Masters. The webcast announcers definitely recognized his skills but pointed out his tendency to “halfpipe It” instead of scoping out pool-ish lines. Also of interest, Amelia Brodka noticed that last year’s female winner Lizzie Armanto (see photo by JCB) was inexplicably left off the hanging banner, even though they had been included in previous years. – Thanks to Concretins Nik for the tip.
