Skate and Annoy: Daily
SOTW 3-25-13: Seattle Vert
This weeks Shot of the Week is near and dear to old GVK’s heart. It’s Payton Moriarity wearing the vert mantle and forging ahead for the youth of skateboarding. It brought a tear to Steve’s eye, mostly because he realized he’ll never be that good. Full frame after the jump, bonus shots at Cold War Skateboards. Photos by Marshall “Stack” Reid.
Seller Notes: “dirty, it’s been used in the street…”
It’s just an auction or a single z-roller truck, vintage, yes, but not a big deal. It’s the auction description that is the best part, and it comes from S&A reader “Skater Dave” who is peddling some of his old gear to make up for lost wages due to a skateboard injury. While I have no scans of the x-ray, I do have the auction description preserved for posterity.
Hopeless Old Men On Skateboards

Sad Sack
Issue 181 of Sad Sack dates back to September of 1966. It may look like a second rate rip off of Beetle Bailey, but Sad Sack debuted as a comic strip in 1942, while Beetle Bailey started in 1950. It has a 40’s aesthetic though. You know it’s bad if the props have to be labeled, as in the case with the skateboard. It says “loved by Millions” on the cover of this Harvey Comics publication, but the contents are pretty horrible inside. At least Beetle Bailey was sometimes actually funny. Full cover after the jump, and no skateboarding in the contents. I bought this on Ebay from a real skateboard historian, Scott Starr. I didn’t realize he was the seller until after I bought it.
The Raging Peasants – Ballad of the headless skateboarder 7“
Sometimes it´s really weird what kinda artists recorded songs about skateboarding or let´s say at least with a connection to skateboarding.
Fellow kids
From season 6 of 30 rock, Steve Buscemi as Lenny Wozniak going undercover in a high school, for reasons I can’t remember It’s episode 8, titled “The Tuxedo Begins.” These screen grabs come from multiple sources. Another picture after the jump that an excellent addition, he’s not just carrying one skateboard. 30 Rock has showed skateboards a couple times over the years and mentioned Tony Hawk at least once.
Archeological artifacts from New Zealand
Spotted on Frontside Grind “The home of old school Kiwi skating circa ’73-now!” This item, tentatively titled a Jetskate, is pretty obscure. – Thanks to OJ for the tip.
Annoying Kid of the Month
Maybe he’s been trying to lose a little weight by riding his longboard to the store. Maybe he’s just a fat kid who brought his fashion accessory to the Ikea cafeteria. Sandals too. Sheesh…
Powell Peralta business cards
These are business cards for Powell Peralta, which are excellent in an of themselves, plus they have the added benefit (or detraction, depending on your point of view) of being reminiscent of the Feederz album “Ever Feel like Killing Your Boss?” which was covered in sandpaper that meant it would destroy any record cover it came in contact with. Likewise, if someone gave you this business card you probably would want to put it in your wallet or pocket next to your phone. The even went the extra step of adding a kicktail. If only they took this attention to detail and applied it to some of their rereleases. And it it goes without saying (except I’m saying it…) that these obviously remind me of the Maple XO hang tags.
