CAR Toons

This is CARtoons comic book #22 from April of 1965. Hot Rod Magazine has a brief history of the series, which started in 1959 and unbelievably ran till 1991. Had a hard time finding any info on the series because I was initially searching for “Cartoons comic book” instead of “Car Toons comic book.” More skateboarding inside? I don’t know. This issue is reportedly valued at about $40. – Thanks to Pig City for the scan.

An oldie and a baddie

We first mentioned Joe Cialglia back in 2012 when he was named in a lawsuit for fixing skatepark bids and defrauding the City of Los Angeles in the process. Well somehow this slipped by (our crack staff) and we failed to report that in 2013, Ciaglia agreed to pay $65,000 dollars to settle the whole thing, while admitting to no wrong doing and not being barred from bidding on new contracts with the city. While yes, this is old news, we’d just like to take the opportunity to remind you that the skatepark company Joe Cialglia owns is none other than California Skateparks. Check out this article in the LA Weekly for all the sordid details. That’s Ciaglia on the far right wearing the Street League t-shirt in the photo above from LA Weekly.

Steak and Skate

Steak ‘n Shake is a Midwest based diner franchise. This graphic is only a hastily Photoshopped stock image from their Facebook page, but it’s surprising that they picked up on Go Skate Day on any level. Anyway, “Steak ‘n Skate” flows better than “Skate ‘n Shake.” – Thanks to Tim Jamison for the tip.

Evergreen Spot

A new spot by Evergreen Skateparks will be going into NE Portland this summer at NE 52nd & Alberta. This small spot (under 3000 square feet) is not part of the 19 approved parks in the now almost fatally stalled Portland Parks skatepark program. This one was instigated and funded by the the Cully neighborhood association. Coincidentally, Grover lives in the Cully neighborhood. I think he was lobbying for a vert ramp.

Econo Mi-Skate

If Scrooge McDuck is so rich, how come he can only afford a half a skateboard? Piscou is what they call Scrooge McDuck in France. It would be like calling him Tightwad over here.

Thrasherland to Rolling Surf

A reader named Jody sent in some pictures of blue fiberglass ramps he owns after seeing an old post here on Thrasherland. These pieces were purchased about 20 years ago in Rhode Island, and most likely came from a skatepark in Maryland called Rolling Surf. More pictures after the jump.

Lightbohrd

Light + board = Lightbohrd

Another skateboard with LED lights, but this one has a little more to it. The Lighbohrd has the battery built into the board and induction charging via licensed Power Mat technology. The lights mimic an automobile, white in from, red in the back, but they also light up specific areas of the board graphics and the lighting intensity and even flashing patters can be controlled by rubbing a magnet over the board. So this is nifty and all… but they don’t expect the skateboard market to make them rich. Lightboard technology has been integrated into snowboards and clothing as well. So they’ve got a business plan, but they haven’t thought out the awkwardly spelled product name and web domain, and once you get to the Lighbohrd web site there aren’t a lot actual pictures of the board. Even so, the Lightbohrd does have the dubious honor of being the “coolest lighted skateboard” to date. – Thanks to Orezona for the tip.
