Concrete Disciples

Finding balance online

Be careful what you wish for. If you spend the time and money to make something worthwhile online, you want people to read it. If you get too many people reading, it can become quite expensive and time consuming to maintain. I used to spend a lot of time on Concrete Disciples and Sleestak. As I started to develop Skate and Annoy more, I gradually chose to spend more time creating on SNA and less time reading other sites. Maintaining these things can be a bitch, just ask the guys who do it. Adding forums generates a headache of a different level of magnitude. Imagine every jackass commenter you see on this site multiplied by 100 or 500. Flame wars, server overloads, spam posts… I know, cry me river right? I haven’t been following it in detail, but I know Jeff Greenwood over at Concrete Disciples had some health issues for a while, and I think he’s turned over the reigns of CD for the most part. A while ago they made the decision to contract an online advertising agency to help generate ad revenue and pay for the heavy usage the site gets. At first there were a lot…

Shot(s) of the Week needed!

We need more shots for Shot of the Week – that little picture that appears on the front page on the right side. Check out other shots to get an idea of the info we need. I’ve got one more shot lined up (by J. Grant Brittain, no less!) and my wife is about to have a baby so I won’t have time to track more down. Even though you’ll be side by side with Brittain, the shots don’t have to be AWESOME (at least not yet!), just pretty good, or unsusual, or interesting, or not by me! Although Grover is more embarassed of the shirt he is wearing than his maneuver, Benihana flyouts will not be accepted. This job pays absolutely nothing, but a web link to the site of your choice. Don’t nominate someone else’s shot either, I need direct permission from the photographer. Send small thumbnails of potential S.O.T.W.s to editor@ this fine web site.

Don't be a dick!

How not to comment on Skate and Annoy

Due to a rash of recent comment flame wars on our beloved Skate and Annoy I thought I should point out a few simple guidelines to keep in mind when commenting: Don’t be a dick. Keep gratuitous swearing to a minimum, especially when it comes to phrases you might hear in an adult film. The first guideline keeps the site from being stupid. The second keeps the site from being added to the content blacklists and filters that some companies and schools use to block content for their viewers. I’d prefer not to have users register to post comments, and I swear, if I have to pull this car over you’ll be sorry! With your help, we can keep Skate and Annoy from becoming this.

SnA Shot of the Week goes live. Finally.

SnA Shot of the Week goes live. Finally.

Getting sick of looking at Shawn Reinert’s ass at Pier Park like Danimal was? Fine. Here’s the very first “Shot of the Week” that will actually change weekly. The page formatting is bunk, but I wanted to get it up and running first. We’ll make it look pretty later. But look at the front page now, the picture has changed at long last. Now to work on the Annoying Kid of the Month! This was street skating circa ’88 at Oak Street Beach in Chicago. You can partially see the name of Chicago’s seminal punk band “

Street Skate

The spice of life

That’s right. variety is the spice of life. We’re looking to add another point of view to Skate and Annoy, something we’ve heard is called street skating, as implausible as that sounds, which is not to be confused with street-style, which is being, er, uh, practiced in the shot above that I got from the Chitown Shred archives. But seriously folks. We need to cover the grittier side of skating. I love skate parks, but there’s a different vibe with skating something found as opposed to something made for skating. Help us out, and get in contact if you think you can be our man on the street. Or woman. Geographic locale is not an issue.

More or Less Annoying?

Keeping in mind that some kinks need to be worked out… is this design more or less annoying than it used to be? Comments? Suggestions?

Mike Swim from EPM

Mike Swim snapped by EPM

Rich from EPM sent over this shot of Mike Swim from you know where. I’ve been screwing with the site layout, so things may look wacky around here for a whle. Chances are if you reload the page in 10 seconds it will go back to normal. So no, we’re not suffering from web site eplipsy. Click to enlarge.

Danimal had a baby

He did it.

When he’s not out skating or contributing to Skate And Annoy, Danimal is doing it, (It! IT!) which reminds me of the time Mrs. Krabappel and Principal Skinner were in the closet making babies and I saw one of the babies and the baby looked at me. Congrats to Dan and his wife on the birth of Lina Anzu Glowicki, who I assume is regular foot.
