Yo-Be Annoyed by This
We’re now officially in the midst of an annoying trend in which toy commercials are promoting other activities besides skating at skateparks. There have been at least two or three, as well as a cheese commercial with RC cars. This one is for the Yo Be, something that looks like a cross between a frisbee and a yo-yo. Best part is, they shot all the action scenes in front of a green screen so there are lot’s of vertigo inducing physics scenarios where camera angles don’t match up.
I’m Sorry in Florida
I caught this commercial last night. I was making a note to look for it back at home, but it turned out to be a Florida-only thing. The cause is Tobacco Free Florida. Hey, I’m on your side, but this sad sack staring at me almost makes me want to take up smoking. Florida locals, where is this park? I guess that’s naive of me, this probably wasn’t even shot in Florida. Or maybe it was, you know they have a Universal Studios theme park in Orlando…
Lazer Tag Skateboarding: Hotter than Ever
This gem of a commercial is an adolescent boy’s smorgasbord of dreams. It’s got skateboards, lasers, ATVs, a post apocalyptic Rollerball-style arena and a referee with a big rack. Come to think of it, that sounds like fun to me too. I think it dates to around 1987 because Worlds of Wonder essentially went out of business in 1988. Look the size of that bowl. I think it may have been built for the commercial. [Source: Pure Skateshop]
Friday T&A on S&A: Valentines edition
What does this web commercial have to do with skateboarding? Well nothing if this isn’t pro skateboarder Alex Olson. I wasn’t sure at first, but I think it’s an actual real product. Girls love Alex Olson. I mean, obviously Girl does, but girls do too. – Thanks to Freakbeatfuzz for the tip. UPDATE: DUH. Forgot to include the video. It’s there now.
Speed Racer tires
Waiter enters stage left and approaches the center table. Waiter: I believe this is the Bridgestone tire commercial with a skateboarder looping a full pipe that we spoke of earlier. Male Patron: Yes, but this is obviously made from upside down footage flipped over and merged with another shot. Female Patron: The give away is the reflection on the ceiling. I want to speak to the manager.
Bam, Him and Plup
PLUP is a Finnish company that sells bottled water. In Finland PLUP Ltd donates 10 euro cents from each PLUP bottle sold, directly to the Baltic Sea Action Group to help clean up the Baltic Sea. Stefan Lindfors shot a commercial for them, and lo and behold, it features a certain professional skateboarder by the name of Bam. It also features the music of Bam’s buddies HIM. Just in case you’re wondering, is that really Bam, or a blond guy with creepy blue eyes that just looks like him, he’s got a gratuitous skateboard on his back. Does anyone else see the irony of an environmentally conscious bottled water company? There’s no actual skating in the commercial, but there is some wakeboarding or wake skating or whatever it’s called. I know the U.S.A. is weird for sure, but so is Finland. Bridgestone adrenaline
I couldn’t find the rumored Bridgestone commercial with the skateboard loop, but I did find this one from 2007 that is a retread (Get it? Ha ha! I’m killing it!) of the car as skateboard theme that I’m going to have to start calling an archetype if they keep making these. This one is pretty weak. Although I might have thought otherwise if I hadn’t seen the exact same concept several times already. Has anyone actually seen the Bridgestone commercial with a skateboard in it?
Jeep Grand Cherokee with Mike McGill
It burns me up when people get these uploaded to YouTube before I’ve even seen them. This commercial for the 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee features Mike McGill as skater dad. Pretty good concept, one very similar to what I gave to MC as an idea for one of his comics. This was uploaded by an actual Jeep dealer. If someone happens to capture this or can tell me on what network and show it aired, drop me a line. I need the high res version for the museum. – Thanks to Andrew Wahl for the tip.
Saturday Starrs #11: 1978 Pepsi Commercial
This 1978 Pepsi commercial has everything; street skating (well, sidewalks), a dog on a longboard, hockey helmets, gorilla gips, flyouts, freestyle, soft volleyball kneepads, skateparks and more. Watch the video, courtesy of skate and surf film historian Scott Starr, after the jump.
Life rolls on
The Life Rolls On Foundation “…is the story of able-bodied individuals, working in concert with those with spinal cord injury, to motivate each other with the inspirational message of achievement in the face of extreme adversity.” Thier flagship progrm is something you might have heard about. It’s called They will surf Again. Here’s an old PSA that should bring to mind Leader O Men.
