That time, that place, continued

Welcome to the second half of the Sonny Robertson photo archives. That’s Dan Wilkes on left and Jeff Phillips on the right, both at a spot called Flux, somewhere in Texas, sometime in the 80’s. Will there be a third – uh, err, half? I suppose that depends on how stoked Sonny is to dig through is archives. There’s more Wilkes and Phillps at Flux as well as a shot of Mike Crum at the Clown ramp after the jump.

Bailgun issue 6

Bailgun #6

OK, this is kind of a backhanded compliment, but you should go download issue number six of Bailgun becasue it’s got this awesome photo in an advertisement for a German company called Rebel Rockers. That’s one of those English names in foreign countries that sounds a lot cooler to the locals than it does to us Americans. Getting back to Bailgun #6, it’s 61 nicely laid out spreads (!) of skateboarding, art, civil disobedience, and more skateboarding. Check it out.

Novice Skatepark

Beavertron novice roundup

Rick went to the meeting and wrote a recap. My favorite part is this excerpt. The committee and THPRD have no plan at all to keep more advanced skaters or bikes out of the novice park. In fact, they seemed very surprised, and somewhat dismayed, that the “advanced” (in years, if not ability) skaters and bikers at the meeting thought the new park looked fun and that we did plan to ride there when it opens. I love it when park officials get dismayed that a park looks fun. You can read the whole story and see some renders of the proposed site after the jump.

Cannon Beach

While you were sleeping…

…they tore down the “skatepark” in Cannon Beach, Oregon. The old park, seen in all it’s glory above, thanks to Skateoregon.com, was more of a spot than a skatepark. It was less than stellar. You can catch a few frames of skating “action” at Seeside in the GVK episode Skate Ghost, at the 6:21 mark. The blog for Cannon Beach’s City Manager hasn’t been updated regarding the skatepark, but Placed to Ride has the contract and a picture of the construction company that was hired to do the retaining walls. I guess they (Mc Ewan Construction) also made a donation to the project. PTR should be breaking ground next week. I liked their work on Seaside, and given the size and location of the Cannon Beach plot, I’m predicting something similar in nature. – Thanks to G.N. for the tip. (Who isn’t this G.N.)

Pool Pirate from AGP

Arrrrgh!

Conahan does a lot of artsy fartsy stuff, some say he even likes saxophones. He’s got a pretty cool shirt design at his home base, Antigravity Press, called the Pool Pirate. It’s analog baby. Since we (OK, I) also want to appeal to the two street skaters that might read this site, I’ve come up with a more digital version called the Curb Pirate. To be fair, I made it out stuff I had laying around, including a cannibalized a font called SkulCApz, whereas Mark actually, you know, drew his utilizing some sort of skill set.

indoors with Johnny Turgesen

Is the rainy season over?

Is the rainy season over here in the Northwest? I feel sorry for you guys in the Midwest, aren’t you in four feet of snow right now? We’re in the middle of a really nice stretch of weather out here, making these indoor spots less of a draw these days. Dave Viera sent in a couple recent shots of local favorite Johnny Turgesen skating inside a nicely color coordinated facility.

Battle Ground session

Battle Ground’s alright, if you like saxophones

Battle Ground Washington. Man that place is like a pinball table. There must not be anything else for kids to do in a 20 mile radius. We went there for a short session on Sunday and the place was packed. We drove by a GSD protege on the sidewalk on the way there and he ended up showing up at the skatepark. Filthy. The park has a solid coating of dried dust and mud from the landscaping and new walkways surrounding the park. The walkways are adjacent to the skatepark concrete and have joints formed in them to discourage skating, but they aren’t big enough to slow you down much. The bike guys at the shallow end of the bowl were getting very sour about multiple skaters being in the bowl at a time. They couldn’t get a run in. I tried to explain that saying the word “Bowl” in a low voice wasn’t going to make people wait for you to drop in. Later, some kid on a bike tried and eventually landed a backflip flyout of the shallow end. He was pleased with himself. Hey, I’ve got pics of the same three guys I always shoot! Check ’em…

80’s Zine Archives - Pad Rot #1

80’s Zine Archives: Pad Rot #1

Every time I see this cover I read Parrot instead of Pad Rot. Apparently Pad Rot was a spinoff from the zine Endless Grind over “editorial differences.” Who knew that zines could sink to such levels of professionalism? Pad Rot was based out of Barrington Illinois. I can’t make out the writing to read the initials or possible name of the writer, but they must have known Skate and Annoy becasue they were also Illinois based, and Pad Rot lifted our Hate Page concept, complete with the Nash logo. I assume it was a tribute.
