pick

Pick your nose, friends, etc…

Santa Cruz / NHS branded guitar picks sold as sk8 picks by Dunlop Picks, so you know htey are decent quality. I love the green .88mm picks for bass. And yes, I am a very mediocre bass player. Worse actually, since I haven’t picked up a bass in years.

Da Year Of Da Moke

Frank De Lim Presents – Da Year Of Da Moke could have been yours for $11, delivered in the US. Totally worth it, regardless of what I sounds like. I was watching the auction with the intention of buying it, but the seller was such an annoying twit that I refused to on principle. “Hey, can I see the whole cover? Sure, as soon as you win the auction and unwrap it.” Yeah right. How effing lazy do you have to be? He scanned the photo and only part of it fits on the scanner. I’ve actually run into this before when buying records online, but usually the seller is smart enough to realize a little cooperation can result in a higher bid. I just don’t get it. Point your cellphone at the cover and shoot the whole damn thing. It’s worse then when people sell something on Craigslist and don’t include any picture. Usually the same mindset of a person that will list something for sale on Craigslist and leave town for the weekend immediately after posting it. OK, rant over. Even though I showed him by not bidding… I’m thinking I should have swallowed my pride and bid…

Annette’s Got the Hits!

If you don’t like Annette Funicello you’re some kind of a dick. It’s like not liking puppies or ice cream. She was a Mickey Mouse Clubhouse kid AND she made a movie (Back to the Beach) with Pee Wee Herman. I thought both Surf Punks were in that too, but only Drew Steele shows up on IMDB. Annettes’s Got the Hits is pretty much my favorite Red Kross/ Red Cross song. Annette Sings Golden Surfin’ Hits will set you back $260 if you want it still sealed in the original shrink-wrap. Ironically, an unopened soundtrack to Back to the Beach starts at $383! (?) I didn’t know Annette had a record with a skateboard on the cover until I saw Doc Skaterock post it on Facebook. (Instead of here for some reason. He must be hanging out with Jim Gray…) I must have missed it in his book. R.I.P. Annette.

The Not-its! – Let’s skateboard

The kids band called the Not-Its! has a song called “Let’s Skateboard” on their album Kidquake. It’s hard to argue with the simplicity of that message. Normally I’d reference a parenting issue with a Naked Raygun quote, but in this case, the message is right on so I have to demur to some hippy shit. Let’s Skateboard video after the jump. Remember potential music critics, this song is meant for little kids. – Thanks to Craig Smith for the tip. WARNING: Don’t cross him or he’ll spend countless hours photoshopping your face on to scooter and rollerblade photos. I speak from experience.

Eazy Duz it.

Eazy E shot by Mike Miller back in 1992, holding a 101 Natas Kaupas deck. There’s another photo of Natas holding a print of this photo floating around Facebook, credited to Miller, but I can’t find it on his web site.

Cankun: Culture of Pink

I obviously don’t know how to write about music, because I could never come up with “something less like VHS-dubbed memories-of-memories than an underwater DJ set,” as Marc Masters did in his Pitchfork review of Cankun’s Culture of Pink. That has got to be Rodney Mullen on the cover, like some grainy, rubylith masked 35 mm enlargement from a newsprint magazine… Dang. Don’t know how write about album covers either. [Photo: Restoring Sounds] – Thanks to Charles Glover for the tip.

Archie Laugh

July of 1967 and they are still trotting out skateboards for the cover gag on Archie comics. Archie looks a little like Greg Brady in this one, although I think Greg might have had better style. The Twist had it’s heyday in 1960, so it’s kind of funny that by 1967 it was already considered “old-fashioned” by girls in unhip comic books. Seriously. Who was the the audience for these? (Click through, you won’t be sorry.)
